Thanks to express mail (and one grocery store run), I was able to taste-drive, with help from a dozen friends happy to lend their pie holes, 52 exceptional pies. Some were rich and elegant, others tart and forthright, all made by bakers committed to carrying forth my Grandma's torch-―that is, a rolling pin. Here's the winner, plus six more that I'm telling you, you gotta try, especially the all-around favorite, which tastes as American as, well, you know.

Apparently, Rachel did not involve newsviners as judges. She would have gotten very different results if this survey is an indication.

Head baker at Verrill Farm in Concord, Massachusetts, Jen Verrill-Faddoul describes her Kentucky bourbon pecan pie as the result of "fooling around with bourbon and chocolate."
Funny. When I fool around with bourbon and chocolate, I just get really drunk with chocolate smeared all over my face. ;-)

Rodney's Dangerously Delicious Pies available in Baltimore and Delaware have got to be the best I've ever had. Rodney is an awesome guitarist and singer who started baking pies for the club owners who'd hire his band.
Check him out.
