Scott (Scoop) Butki asked me to post the following since he's away from his computer for the next 24 hours.
Will someone review this lie detector tv show, called the Moment of Truth? I don't think I can watch it without throwing something at the tv. The questions, the manipulation, argh.
I might watch it too and turn my reaction into a rant. But my rant would be more about the concept than a review of the actual program. Will someone play straight man to me doing whatever I do?
I can't watch any reality tv.
I honestly think it is harming our society.
I agree wholeheartedly vacelts.
I watch little TV and never "reality"TV which is closely planned anyway. I would rather watch grass grow.
The 'teasers' for this program have been more than I can stomach. American Idol does not set out to destroy lives. There are people who cannot sing but truly believe they can. Idol gives them the opportunity to demonstrate their delusion. They may have a momentary period of disappointment but families are not destroyed. The lives that are changed by Idol are those that have become stars as a result of appearing on the show. Several have had hugely successful albums and singles. One has won an Oscar (even if she still seems bitter). A couple have done well on Broadway.
The worst rap about Idol is some comments made by Simon Cowell. Most of them have been pertinent to the ability of the person addressed. In most cases, Simon was trying to get the contestant to get in touch with reality - they cannot sing well enough to be entertaining. Some people can take a hint, others need a 2x4 between the eyes.
I cannot see anything good coming from this program. Any "winners" will have had their relationship severely strained. I do not plan to watch.
It was the teasers that sparked my thought. I can't stomach watching this show regularly, let alone being on it.
That said I did watch the first night and while it was as outrageous and offensive as I thought it was not so bad that it sparked a rant.
or I was just tired.
Instead I just typed:
"I expected to be repulsed by this program. So manipulative, so clichéd.
What I found more annoying than the show's concepts was the judge, "That answer is (4 minutes later) true."
But in a course of an hour I watched one man admit to touching patients at times he did not have to and admit to have a one nite stand
The second man questioned if his wife was/should be his life-time commitment.
It's just a matter of time, I think, until shows like this or American Idol drove someone to suicide and blood will be on the hands of all viewers.
I think there WAS a suicide with one of the first Big Brothers when it was done overseas, before it was imported here.
OH, oh - we turned this article into a rant of its own.
You noticed that, did you? Meanwhile the show got huge ratings.
This does not surprise me. People used to gather in very large groups for the public hangings. As long as it is someone else the destruction of a life has always been a huge entertainment.
As I wrote over there it's just a matter of time until excecutions are televised and as an opponent of capital punishment who wonders if people would reject it if they saw how imperfect it is as a solution I can't decide if I find that concept despicable or the perfect medicine for this sick nation.
I get my TV fix watching MSNBC, NBC, CNN and once in a very great while Fox (which rhymes with sucks). I get my fill of entertainment right here on Newsvine and if I get bored I will write something entertaining to others.
once in a very great while Fox (which rhymes with sucks).
Liberal much? ;)
It's okay, so am I. I was watching coverage of the New Hampshire primary on Fox, and my parents were like, "What are you watching? Turn it to CNN!"
I have a hard time calling it:
"Reality TV"
Most of it is as unreal as it gets.
Let's go with that.
I dunno. Maybe, it's just me, but the whole premise of this show seems pretty evil.
I agree. It seems to be trying to be hurtful, to destroy people and their lives.
I think these type of shows are doing much more than that Vacelts, I think they are corrupting the social values of an entire generation, along with the immediate damage to individuals that they are undoubtedly causing.
50 years ago we watched the test patterns! TV was not an around the clock endeavor nor did it always start on time.
Did you watch this week?
I could feel the show pulling me in like a driver passing an accident and feeling the natural desire to slow down and look but my god, they were publicizing it like it was a good thing to show a woman having a nervous breakdown on tv. Sick.
So yes I skipped it this time.
