No Real Surprises in First Round of American Idol Elimination

Garrett Haley

Colton Berry

Amy Davis

Joanne Borgella

After two nights, 24 performances and 28 million votes, American Idol held its first elimination of the semifinals with no real surprises in the results.

The guys knocked their numbers down to 10 by eliminating Leif -- I mean, Garrett Haley -- and Colton Berry. Both sang their farewell songs. And I actually think I preferred Garrett's swan song to his performance Tuesday. But maybe that's just because I liked the hat.

I was a little startled that Danny Noriega wasn't in the bottom tier, but then I realized that he's the new Sanjaya. Hopefully Danny's run in this title will be short lived. I'm not sure I'm going to be able to handle many more weeks of performances like Tuesday's "Jailhouse Rock."

With so many mediocre performances from the women Wednesday night, a handful of the ladies could have been up for the bottom two spots.

Since Amy Davis and Joanne Borgella's song choices for the '60s both landed them in the lower echelon, their departure was believable. If you had any doubts that these two should stick to modeling, their final performances erased them.

In general I'm a little worried about the women. They were literally following apart after the eliminations were announced. If they are bawling this hard after the first round, are they going to make it to the Top 12?

The group number was nothing impressive, but I liked the look. Hair and makeup must have worked overtime. That's the best we seen some of the contestants look.

And finally, I must end with a complaint ('cause I've been so positive thus far). I thought I was watching American Idol, not Relauch Paula's Career.

I can live with the fact that she's a judge and the producer of her new song is also a judge for a show with a ready audience. But if she's going to showcase her new song, the least she could have done is perform it live.

She sits in judgment (if that's what you call what she does) of all of these contestants telling them that they have to bring their very best to the table for every performance and she hides behind a taped performance. What kind of example is she setting?

And just for the record, I wasn't impressed with the song or the video.

Who's leading the conversation?
This visualization below allows you to see the impact that each user has on the current conversation. The top row contains the group of users who have had the most impact, the 2nd row the group of users who have had the 2nd most impact (et cetera). Users with similar impact are grouped together, and the average score of the group is shown to the left of the group. The author of the article is also shown on the left, in their corresponding group. Each user's score is based on the number of comments the user has made plus the number of votes their comments have received. The scores are calculated relative one another, so while their absolute value is not particularly important, their relative difference does indicate a larger difference in impact on the conversation.

What do you think -- Did America get it right?

Also what do you think of Paula's new single?

I'm so glad I didn't watch it. I have no problems with those who left.

The results shows are so much fluff. I find them really hard to endure. I actually DVRed it and then watch it. Somehow it makes it go faster.

I was a little surprised the Colton Berry left instead of Danny, but not a lot. Didn't even really remember Amy Davis so no surprise there. I was right about the other two. And yes, Garrett did a much better job with his swan song than he did the first time. If he had done it like that the first time, he might have staid.

I didn't really pay attention to Paula's video, but the little I saw was a perfectly acceptable pop song. It was nice to see Randy in action.

Randy's cameo in the video was the best part.

But apparently even Paula doesn't like the video.

I had a hard time taking the video seriously,

It was kinda like when Eddie Murphy had his music, you didn't know if you were supposed to laugh or not...

Also, it kinda looked like it was shot by the same people who do the Ford Commercials with the AI contestants in it.

The worst part is it reminded us all why Paula's the nice one, and is always careful to tell someone how good they look if their singing sucks. She's acutely aware that the ability to sing is not a prerequisite for pop stardom, just gotta look good.

Yeah it almost felt like it was a parody of Paula's early work.

Apparently, her "comeback" hasn't been easy and she's suffering from stage fright. I don't expect to hear anything put positive gushing to come out of her mouth (even more than usual) in her role as judge because of that.

I think America got it OK,

I would have liked to see the anemic leif garrett get another shot, he was just so nice about hearing the feedback.

I think plus sized model deserved to go based on that one performance, but she's definitely a better singer AEB her swan song.

High School Musical; Simon is right about him, kinda. I think the guy could do pretty well on Broadway. He definitely has no future as a recording artist. Big S**T eating grin on his face as his singing a song about breaking up over suspicion of cheating, did this kid have any idea what song he was singing???

-Oh, btw, i only know them by the nicknames I give them, some of which I think are kinda clever.

greck, I like your nicknames. I think they are dead on.

I don't think we saw enough of Garrett to know if he had a bad night or wasn't all the good. But I think he sang better last night than Tuesday.

From the auditions and Hollywood, I expected more for Joanna, the plus size model.

I think it was clear that theater is Colton's strong suit.

Did you not have any comments about Amy Davis, the other model?

Is good looks a factor in judging.

I'd say inasmuch as looks is a big factor in whether or not someone makes a good pop star, yeah, sadly.

Somebody wrote a comment under the men's performance article that his wife wanted to vote for one of the guys because she thought he had a cute butt.

So yes I'm sure looks is a factor in voting, among other things.
