Down to 16 – American Idol Results Show

Jason could make him self stand out.

Alex's last performance was forgettable.

America was not hopelessly devoted to Alaina.

Robbie couldn't prove that he was the real deal.

Then they were 16. American Idol whittles its numbers down when it sends four more home in the second results show of the semifinals after 31 million votes.

Ryan's delivery of the first elimination from the Top 20 is more suspenseful than last week and a bit kinder than the "can I talk to you, oh yeah you are out of here" speech that he gave Garrett Haley right off the bat.

Up first on the chopping block – Jason Yeager. This decision is no surprise as Jason has not been able to find a song that, as Simon says, makes him stand out. Jason was the only one of my picks to hit the road tonight.

Next up – Alexandrea Lushington. I like Alex, she has potential. But her performance Wednesday night was so forgettable I can't even remember what she did. I'm not surprised that she is going home. I will give the girl credit. For only being 17, she was incredible composed when she heard the news and sang her swan song.

Alaina Whitaker didn't take the news that America wasn't "hopelessly devoted" to her as well. With a little moral support from the rest of the girls, she finally did sing and didn't sound so bad considering how much she was crying. Anyone else think her family looked like they were going to eat Ryan alive?

And last to depart was Robbie Carrico – the would-be rocker that Simon says isn't authentic. I was actually surprised by this selection. I didn't think Robbie would make the Top 12, but I thought he'd be around for another week. I wonder if America doesn't like his rocker sound or if they just agree with Simon that he's not the real thing.

Ryan also left us with a few Idol announcements. March 11 will be the first time the Top 12 performs. They will be treated to a new stage, background, graphics and exit song. And the theme will be the recently released Lennon/McCartney songs. April 9 is the next Idol Gives Back night and slated for participation is Brad Pitt, Miley Cyrus, Reese Witherspoon, Mariah Carey, Snoop Dog, Chris Daughtry and Carrie Underwood.

What do you think? Did the right four get sent home?

Who's leading the conversation?
This visualization below allows you to see the impact that each user has on the current conversation. The top row contains the group of users who have had the most impact, the 2nd row the group of users who have had the 2nd most impact (et cetera). Users with similar impact are grouped together, and the average score of the group is shown to the left of the group. The author of the article is also shown on the left, in their corresponding group. Each user's score is based on the number of comments the user has made plus the number of votes their comments have received. The scores are calculated relative one another, so while their absolute value is not particularly important, their relative difference does indicate a larger difference in impact on the conversation.

Robbie Carrico's departure is interesting especially since I had just read about how he had "Idol execs flipping out." Do you think it was a factor?

Also do you think the Vote for the Worst campaign that kept Sanjaya alive last year is having an impact this year?

So far those that have been sent home deserve to be. I might have chosen a different order but I am not upset that any have gone.

Me too. But no I don't think that we saw anyone worthy of the Top 12 leave yet. Who do you think will go next?

I think Luke Menard and Danny Noriega will be next. Chikezie is another possiblity.

I think Amanda and Kady will go from the girls.

Here are my predictions for the Top 12.

We agree on the women, although I'd like to see Amanda stay. I think the guys are still up for debate.

None of who got sent surprises me but I thought Alexandrea might have lasted another week. While Overmyer got saved it won't be long before she goes unless she starts singing a whole lot better and stop trying to jerk her way through a song - it's hard to watch and is not particularly attractive. I don't think she realizes that a lot of people don't care for hard rock so she needs to endear herself a little more. There are a half dozen with real promise. Keep picking the right songs.

I like hard rock so I don't find Amanda that irritating, but her performance this week was pretty bad. And you are right, she's got to work to make herself endearing to the mainstream.

I thought it would be Kady going home this week.

Amanda reminds me of Ryan Starr. Simon and the rest tried to tell her to broaden her appeal. Ryan insisted that she was a rocker. She was eliminated. She continues to try to be a rocker. She has a voice that would allow her to be like Cher. Amanda is a much better bluesy rock singer. She will be gone if she insists on another pure rock song.

I was just surprised that Amanda didn't go home. Her performance last week was atrocious.

So was I. I'm glad she didn't. I think she has potential. But she's going to have to work hard to stay safe.
