Ramiele sings her farewell song.
Tonight American Idol did what my husband calls "trimming the fat" (and no he's not referring to anyone's weight). The bottom pair have been hanging on for weeks and it was time for one of them to go.
I, for one, am happy to say so long to Ramiele Malubay. In fact, I called her farewell tonight. (Actually I'm been calling for Ramiele's swan song for weeks, so I was bound to get it right sooner or later).
While Kristy Lee Cook's performances haven't always been stellar, she's given us something to talk about over the weeks (not always in a positive way) and has taken a few risks (although not all of them panned out in her favor).
On the other hand, Ramiele has turned in one boring performance after another week after week. In fact, Ramiele's performances are so forgettable that I can't even remember what songs she's sang in this competition without checking my notes.
It was truly time to say good bye to Ramiele. Ironically, her farewell performance was one of her better ones, reminiscent of her audition. A little emotion can add so much to a song. Maybe we should have made her cry before each show. And with nothing left to lose, she had a bit more confidence too.
I was a little surprised to see Brooke rounding out the trio in jeopardy. She's always seemed to be a favorite, but I guess that's just proof that nobody's safe at this point in the game.
Dolly Parton, who sang her new single "Jesus & Gravity," stole the show tonight, not with her performance, but with a single line she said to Ryan afterwards.
"I've got Jesus. You've got Simon. That's all you need."
Priceless. I told you Dolly would be fun to have on the show and there's your proof.
Also stealing some screen time tonight was the winners of the Next Great American Band, The Clark Brothers. I had never seen the show and didn't know what to expect when they announced that the band was doing "This Little Light of Mine."
Let me tell you that wasn't like anything I sang in Sunday School. I was blown away by their rockabilly sound and am sorry I missed them in competition. Particularly impressive was the guy on the acoustic steel guitar. He was amazing!
This performance is one time I don't mind the Fox cross promotion. I actually hope we get to hear more from The Clark Brothers.
Given the rest of the tone of the night, the "It's Tricky" Ford video seemed a little out of place. Couldn't they find a song with a more country or bluegrass feel and saved that one for another night?
Overall, I am satisfied with tonight's results. What about you? Do you feel the right person went home? Who do you think are the real contenders?

I watched some of that show and the Clark Brothers are amazing. They are extremely talented musicians on multiple instruments, and their original arrangements of songs are mindblowing. What you saw tonight is pretty typical of their performances.
At this point of the competition, more and more of the middle tier will find themselves in the bottom three with just a single bad performance. Part of that is because there really isn't much of a bottom tier left.
I said that Ramiele seemed to be lost for several weeks. She stopped being the least bit entertaining long ago.
So happy she's finally gone.
I just published that piece we were discussing via text last nite about the phone call questions on the show
That's the idea. So who's going to make these actual calls?
Before or after they drink?
Was reading TWOP last nite.
Television Without Pity provides the best summary of the problem with David A.:
"So, as always with David Archuleta, the self-consciousness of the performance overwhelms what remains an impressive and precociously strong voice. I would probably like these performances so much better as straight-up audio. 'Course, nothing will make his little "hoo-ooo-ooo" tail on the end of this song sound anything less than cheesy. The crowd screams and the judges freak out, of course, but I wonder about this kind of praise becoming rote. More and more, I can see the Archuleta fanbase getting complacent one week and something weird happen. Or else we'll all be rendered deaf by his screaming mosh pit fans. I can't wait for the week the Jonas Brothers come to town and nobody's around to scream for him."
I dont drink while watching it since i'm at work so someone else has to call. How about your husband?
I watched the Next Great American Band when it was on and loved the show. The Clark Brothers were great. And rarely had a bad performance. My favorite performance of theirs was during Rod Stewart week when they sang "You're in My Heart". (They had a singer or band that was a theme for each week. The Rolling Stones, the Who and Bob Dylan are ones I can remember. The bands also got to play some of their original stuff. It was a good show!) I can't wait for their album.
Glad Ramiele is finally off the show. I hope Kristy and Jason are the next ones to go. If so, the top 6 would be pretty amazing.
Was I the only one that thought afro puffs did a really good job of singing "I will always love you?"
I mean, she didn't go the Whitney route, stuck more to the Dolly original, but didn't just copy that either. I definitely thought she had a strong enough voice to carry her version of it.
lullaby was great a-capella, but I think her voice tone got lost with the band and the backup singers. She should have gone with a more stripped down sound. Even then though, she just lacked spark.
I think hippie travolta will be around for another couple of weeks if he can pull out another "halleluia" type song; he's not that great a singer, but he's really appealing. He just needs to reach the audience again.
Kristy; well, she knows she's going, it's just a matter of when. She's had a couple of not so bad weeks, but....
I'm not sad to see Ramiele go, but I do think she can sing. She just wasn't a great or interesting performer as some of the other contestants.
Ramiele needed to go.
I get an arrogant vibe from Syesha for some reason. Anyone else feel that way?
i completely agree. i get the arrogant vibe from syesha as well. good call!!
there is fine line between confidence and arrogance and just the way she carries herself makes me feel like it's the latter.
And there should be some artists whose songs should not be made available to the contestants (Celine, Whitney and Mariah) unless by some miracle they can surpass the original.
