The Elite 8

Tonight's American Idol was more about preparing the audience for "Idol Gives Back" with each of the Elite 8 singing their favorite inspirational song. But will the performances inspire voters?

Honestly, I was expecting a droll night of one ballad after another, but I was actually surprised by a few of the performances.

Michael Johns is on a roll. He picked another fitting song for his inspirational number with Aerosmith's "Dream On." While I don't really see him as a rocker, I think he turned a pretty good performance. And in a night bound to be plagued with lots of boring ballads, Michael stood out.

Also cashing in on a good song choice was Jason Castro, who finally stepped up and took a risk with an unusual rendition of "Somewhere Over the Rainbow." I'm not entirely sure if I liked Israel Kamakawiwo'ole's version, because I always picture the Wizard of Oz when I hear this song. And with the ukulele, I saw a beach scene with a little hut in the background. The song was just different, but it was well done. And for that Jason should get kudos.

Likewise, Kristy Lee Cook is getting wiser with her song choices. Not only did Martina McBride's "Anyway" give her a country tune to showcase her voice, but her personal connection (and it was fitting) to the words of the song gave her an avenue to bring out the emotion of the song as well. It's scary that I'm going to agree with Paula again, but this song definitely was one of her best performances.

On the other hand, song choice might not have worked in David Cook's favor. He stepped out again by choosing a pretty unique song – "Innocent" by Our Lady Peace. While I liked the beat of the song, I wasn't blown away by his performance which ended with a message on his hand to "Give Back." Although this wasn't my favorite number, Cook still puts in a solid performance that should keep him in the running.

The other half of the Top 8 had good song choices, but still the performances didn't inspire.

I was happy to see Brooke White without an instrument as she performed Carole King's "You've Got a Friend" and her performance was enjoyable. But, if I'm truthful, I think she made the song feel sad instead of inspirational and in doing so took out the thunder behind an otherwise pleasant performance.

Another performance that didn't quite go the extra mile was Syesha Mercado. As expected, Syesha picked another big ballad with "I Believe" by former Idol winner Fantasia. And while she sang it beautifully, her performance didn't move me. I have to agree with Randy and Simon that Syesha might have the voice to take on these big songs but she's missing the emotional bond that makes the ballad so powerful.

Similarly, I really wanted to like Carly Smithson's performance of "The Show Must Go On" because I'm a big fan of Queen. And the song started off with potential with the whole orchestra in the background, but in the end I just didn't get it. Not only did I not connect with the song, I'm still wondering where she was trying to go with it.

Finally, David Archuleta sang "Angels." I'm probably in the minority here, but I was not enthusiastic about this performance. I can't say that he performed it badly. It just didn't leave an impression on me. Tomorrow I will have forgotten all about the song. And in this stage of the game, the performances need to be memorable.

My picks for the bottom three come down to emotion, or lack of it, in the case of my predictions. In the bottom tier I nominate Archuleta, Carly and Syesha. And I know that it's not likely to happen, but my pick to go home is Archuleta.

This visualization below allows you to see the impact that each user has on the current conversation. The top row contains the group of users who have had the most impact, the 2nd row the group of users who have had the 2nd most impact (et cetera). Users with similar impact are grouped together, and the average score of the group is shown to the left of the group. The author of the article is also shown on the left, in their corresponding group. Each user's score is based on the number of comments the user has made plus the number of votes their comments have received. The scores are calculated relative one another, so while their absolute value is not particularly important, their relative difference does indicate a larger difference in impact on the conversation.

I liked Michaels Johns, especially when he hit the high notes. He sound a lot like Steve Tyler for a moment.

Syesha was very good. I think they were a bit harsh on her. Maybe she'll start picking songs from artists that she won't be compared to from now on.

I wasn't too impressed with David Arculetta either. He's good, but he's boring.

Carly she sounded like she was angry, but I like her.

Jason was good, but the praise he got was a little bit much. It wasn't that great.

I still liked my fav Dave Cook, but it was definitely not one of his better performances. I didn't understand the pompous comment Simon made. He's said things to that affect to Dave before. I don't think Dave is pompous or smug or whatnot at all.

Brook did make the song sound sad. It was actually kinda depressing.

Kristy Lee was good. It was one of her better performances.

Thanks for your comments.

I didn't understand the pompous comment Simon made.

In one of the reviews early on, David C. talked back to Simon essentially saying I don't care if you like me or not, the fans do. And for that one comment alone, I think Simon comes up with the pompuous comments.

This week was pretty weak. The only performance that stood out for me was Jason Castro's. The moment he mentioned the song he was going to do, I hoped it would be the version that he did, because that was perfect for him. Of course I didn't know the version from the guy who did it originally, but from Scrubs...

Brook's performance was ok, but I think Orson Scott Card (scroll all the way down) finally figured out what's been bothering me about her:

The conclusion is obvious: Brooke White suffers from horrible stage fright! I've seen it before in other singers. Practicing, or in front of friends, they sing wonderfully; then they get up on the stage and their voices go wacko -- in just the ways that Brooke's voice does.

Unlike many of the other contestants, Brooke White has not been performing in clubs, where she could learn to overcome her stage fright. She is years behind the others in this one area.

Michael John's performance was terrible. He really does seem to be imitating a rock star. Syesha's was technically sound, but boring and emotionless as possible. Kristy Lee Cook really is getting better, she's no longer been the absolute worst performance each night, but her ceiling is still pretty low. David Archuleta's was boring, and also quite bad. His piano playing was so bad, they turned the volume way down in the mix. His voice sounded like he had a head cold and it was a tad monotone. I think it may finally be Carly's time to leave. Her song did nothing for me. I'm finally giving up on her.

And then there is David Cook. Easily his second worst performance next to "Day Tripper" and the vocoder fiasco in Beatle's Week II. The problem wasn't so much that he was bad, but that it was boring and forgettable. He doesn't have the greatest or most interesting voice. His whole shtick, which has worked wonderfully for him, has been to be pseudo-original. Even if he was doing a cover of a cover, he still makes the song his own. He doesn't just sing the original version and be done with it ... until tonight, where he basically sang the original version straight up and did nothing interesting with it. I think he needs to stick to pop songs and make them alternative rock. That's his gold mine. Just doing alternative rock songs reminds us of how boring he actually is.

That's why Jason Castro's performance worked tonight, because he took a Judy Garland song and made it his own. Yes, it was a cover of a cover and not exactly original, but he took a song out of his style and sang it in his style and that's interesting.

The problem with someone like Syesha who keeps singing songs just like the originals is that you get compared to the original, and you are almost always going to be worst. When you change up the song, then you get out from the shadow of the original. Chikezie had this problem as well, except for his one amazing performance of the Beatle's "She's a Woman" which he totally owned.
