Do you find music inspirational?
Total Votes: 539
Last night on American Idol, the Elite 8 say the song that most inspires them. I was a bit surprised at the range of songs they chose.
Several of the contestants stepped up to the plate with inspiration performances.
And it got me wondering what song would I pick as my inspirational choice (I promise that I won't sing, just write).
I've decided on Lee Ann Womack's "I Hope You Dance."
I hope you never fear those mountains in the distance
Never settle for the path of least resistance
Living might mean taking chances
But they're worth taking
Lovin' might be a mistake
But it's worth making
It took me a long time to realize that the safe route wasn't always the best route. I was afraid of failure. I didn't realize that I would become a better person because of the chances I take, that the rewards outweigh the risks.
And that's a life lesson I hope to pass on to my kids and I think this song does a great job of relaying that message.
I would have to choose three:
Hero by M People
I'm Alive by Celine Dion
and Because You Love Me by Celine.
Pretty awesome and moving songs. :o)
Good question vacelts.
Powerful song, isn't it? :o)
Great choices, all. I'm going to have to think about this. What an excellent topic!
you'll never walk alone
Excellent song, Vincent. Very emotive with lots of history.
Whoa.. Tough one since there are so many that are important to me !
One I never grow tired of: Flashdance: What a feeling
What a feeling.
When the dancer becomes the dance.
Take your passion... And make it happen!
Something happens when she hears the music... it's her freedom. It's her fire. It's her life
The Classic Tedd A Time For Us

I am a Cancer.....pretty much a romantic softie....
Yeah I love listening to Lisa, she has a unreal voice and such a wide tonal range.
I actually have never seen that one....
The greasy hair cheese look was just too much for me when I saw the posters for it...
Can I have one more ? I love this one.......Special meaning for me and my daughter

Time of Your Life, Dirty Dancing
Brilliant one this is, vacelts. I really love it just to listen and dance to.
Clannadh's "Ride On".
Most of my songs either inspire me to verse,
or get me in the mood for war. Granted there rarely is a war to get into,
but I enjoy the mood.
-Dave
Clannadh's "Ride On".
Good one too.
Yeah Clannad will do that to you, depends on the mood I am in...
For years in the States, nobody knew who I was talking about when I mentioned them.
You might start charging me rent....

Good found it, Wish I could play like David Lanz, a local awesome Piano Player and one of my favorite. Funny as I taught my daughter how to play this and now she is way better then me...
Cristofori's Dream: David Lanz
These next two are another friend that is one very talent person that has a small band and 1 CD, almost got number 2 finished and I think has some pretty amazing talent both in writing and music. Is There Anyone Left? Saher Galt
anyone left there inside,
anyone left alive?
will I hear your whispers,
or the deafening wail of sirens?
tell me is there anyone inside?I know you waited for me here, blind by your tears,
all alone, all these years, could I lose you dear,
when I am so near?thought I might forget you in time,
you never even left my mind.
now I've come to find you,
but I fear I've come too late,
tell me there's one life left to save...no, this don't stop here, though we're long past hope, because you and I know it's meant to be...
and if all I have found is silent now,
then I'll lay down too, near you.
I kinda liked both the music and the video effects that Saher did with the one also. The Beautiful Longing Words: Saher Galt
I heard the beautiful, longing words,
and knew that's just what comes first.
she's speaking a slow, black hearse,
to carry me out.I saw the sultry, unending dance,
the vile, inviting glance,
pointed away from me-
I know just what this means.I learned nothing new in truth,
I learned nothing new,
just blood and tears escaping my youth,
and the long red trail leads right back to you.I knew treachery in an instant,
and memories once so brilliant,
drifted off sadly dim,
into the distance.
He has a band also that you can listen to the whole CD (free) just by going to the web page, nothing like some free music :-) Galt Aureus
OK promise, no more music from me since I used up 99% of your column space...
But, Tedd, that Carlton Draught ad rocks!
That's why I saved it too my favorites...It was a classic...I am surprised I had never seen it.
Clannad is fantastic. Maire Brennan continues to make awe-inspiring music.
Maire Brennan is the ultimate test of a stereo system just how well it will perform at its limits. I use her all the time as my "Test CD" for checking out new equipment, headphones, speakers, etc. If it will pass her unreal tonal range, it will pass anything.....
Pat Benatar is another good one for testing music systems. Plus I just happen to love her music...
It's a local Australian ad. Run a YouTube search for more, Carlton Draught have a history of clever ads.
My guess is the US legal system would block that ad for copyright violation and public displays of underarms. That is pretty wild stuff for our virgin eyes to see.
I cannot believe I forgot Dan Fogelberg. I think I have learned almost every song of his on both guitar and piano and that was a rough day for me when he passed away. I could fill a book with my favorites of his. But a mini-sample"
My favorite same auld lang syne
My all time favorite from Dan Believe In Me
If I could ever say it right
And reach your hostage heart
Despite the doubts you harbor
Then you might
Come to believe in me.The life I lead is not the kind
That gives a woman peace of mind
I only hope someday youll find
That you can believe in me.Those other loves that
Came before
Mean nothing to me anymore
But you can never be quite sure
And will not believe in me.Too many hearts have been broken
Failing to trust what they feel
But trust isnt something
Thats spoken
And loves never wrong
When its real.If I could only do one thing
Then I would try to write and sing
A song that ends your questioning
And makes you believe in me.Too many hearts have been broken
Failing to trust what they feel
But trust isnt something
Thats spoken
And loves never wrong
When its real.If I could only do one thing
Then I would try to write and sing
A song that ends your questioning
And makes you believe in me
Oh, you can believe in me.
Aug. 13 1951 --- Dec. 16 2007 R.I.P My friend Dan
A personal letter from D.F.I cannot adequately express my gratitude to all of the thousands of wonderful people who have sent such incredibly moving and supportive e-mails via the Living Legacy web site. It is truly overwhelming and humbling to realize how many lives my music has touched so deeply all these years. Each one of you who have taken the time and effort to reach out to Jean and I have helped immeasurably to uplift our spirits and keep us looking strongly forward during some very rough moments. I thank you from the very depths of my heart.
I currently have no plans to return to the concert stage or the recording studio in the foreseeable future, but who knows? At least for now, I prefer to keep my options open.
Again my deepest thanks and love to all,
Dan
Yes, Dan Fogelberg ... great artist and tragic loss.
Some of my favorite inspirational songs from him, in addition to the ones you mentioned ...
"Along the Road"
"Phoenix"
"To the Morning"
"Wandering Shepherd"
That was a rough day for me as he was a huge inspiration for me in my music career. I have ever one of his CD's and seen him in concert 11 times and know at least 25 of his songs by heart.
That is one artist and friend I never shall forget.
Same Auld Lang Syne is a sad story, but it also is a true story of when Dan went home to visit his Dad and he ran into his second girlfriend, so its a very real story, nothing left out.
Check out the very first question on his web site...I can give you a small hint as to you wrote him that question also :-)
Awesome site for info on Dan also.
My favorite photo after he found out about cancer, he and his wife went:
Island Hoping
http://www.danfogelberg.com/christmas2005.html
The album he did with Ricky Skaggs is one of my favorites. I also love "Phoenix" and "Netherlands" and "The Innocent Age," as well as his stunning work with Tim Weissberg. Dan Fogelberg was what I think we could call a "beautiful soul" whose artistry defied easy categorization.
Good call, Ted. I appreciate your tribute to him here. He is definitely worthy of it.
You just picked some of my favorites. I saw Dan live with Tim Weissberg and that was a true work of art between two masters.
Dan had several albums that never really made it big, but have some of his best works on them if you ever get a chance to check them out

Thanks for what you said Tom, that means alot to me !
Another amazing singer that I first heard when I was in Prague is a Polish singer, I wish I could find her albums in the States, she has a amazing voice. Sorry...it is in Polish...
Number 1 hit Patrycja Markowska - Gdy zgasną światła
This is a really interesting question. I don't have links, but I'll give some quotes from mine. I'd have to have a few, too, like Ms C and like the Theme Song thread. (Was that one you, too?)
With all that I am,
I will lift my voice
To start this revolution.
It starts today
And it starts with me!
Silent no longer!
-Killswitch Engage, "Break the Silence"
Now's the time to rearrange your life and life for something outside of your own mind.
-Rise Against, "Alive and Well"
And someday soon, my friends, this ride will come to and end,
But we can't just get in line again.
-Streetlight Manifesto, "Somewhere in the Between"
I can't think of anything else off the top of my head, but if I do later I'll come back.
Most people haven't heard most of my music, and a good percentage of them don't like the first one. ;)
Bob Marley, Redemption Song .
I'm glad you like it.
(I meant to note that the first link goes to a YouTube video. )
Excellent choice.
Redemption Song - Lyrics
"Old pirates, yes they rob I,
Sold I to the merchant ships,
Minutes after they took I
From the bottomless pit.
But my hands were made strong
By the hand of the Almighty,
We forward in this generation
Triumphantly. Won't you help to sing
These songs of freedom,
'Cos all I ever had, redemption songs.Emanicipate yourselves from mental slavery
None but ourselves can free our mind.
Have no fear from atomic energy
Cos non o'them can stop the tide.
How long shall they kill our prophets
While we stand aside and look?
Some say it's just a part of it,
We've got to fulfill the Book.
Won't you help to sing
These songs of freedom,
'Cos all I ever had, redemption songs."
Awesome, amazing song, Michael, with real feeling behind it, and with one of the most quoted lines in a song. I remember when Bob Marley made it in Trench Town, and if you knew Trench Town, you would know why that song came out of him! Thanks for that.
Excellent song. Lately, I've found myself enjoying the Johnny Cash and Joe Strummer duet version more than the original though.
Yep, the Cash/Strummer rendition from Unearthed is really spare and heartfelt. I also like ... hold onto your hat ... the Johnny Cash/Fiona Apple version of "Bridge Over Troubled Water."
I think Trenchtown Rock does it for me...
Oooopss...sorry, Michael, didn't see your lyrics link. :o)
No worries Ms CYPRAH, it's all good.
"Lust for Life" - Iggy Pop
Billy Joel, She's Got a Way
Thanks, I grew up in New York City, so Billy the Kid was a fav.
I would also throw You're My Home into the mix.
When you touch my weary head
And you tell me ev'rything will be alright
You say use my body for your bed
And my love will keep you warm throughout the night
Well I'll never be a stranger and I'll never be alone
Wherever we're together
That's my home
Can there be a better way to describe a true relationship? "Wherever we're together that's my home"
Oh..my iTunes budget is just getting shot to pieces....

The entire soundtracks of Chariots of Fire and Rocky and the entire Beach Boys Pet Sounds and Stevie Wonder Songs in the Key of Life albums.
Tom... my personal and all time favorite lullaby for my kids, which they can still sing verbatim today.... was this... can you name that tune??
Sleep, sleep tonight and may your dreams be realized and if the thunder cloud passes rain, so let it rain, rain down on me....

Now playing the Tom and RebelGirl show
LOL... Tedd and Ms. C.. .that would be a great feature, the Tom and RebelGirl Show... Tom has great taste in music! BTW...you have put in alot of your own two cents and I was truly only following Tom's phenomenal lead... I can't help it I am a total music junkie!
BTW... you both should click the link, its amazing. It is the lullaby I sang my kids when they were little :O)
I love it... the kids dad was born and raised in Belfast... so they are 1/2 Irish!
Thanks!!!!
Have any of you heard this?
It sounds nice, but a little too sad for me tonight... I need to find something more uplifting!
Having trouble with my computer links tonight, but did you by any chance link "Belfast Child" by Simple Minds? I love that song and I love the city.
"Alive and Kicking," speaking of Simple Minds, is a great tune.
For lullabyes, I used to sing "Alright for Now" by Tom Petty, and also "Blue Shadows on the Trail" from the "Stay Awake" Disney Tribute CD.
And, LOL, Ms. C, I'm just cheating now by listing so many songs. So far, Vacelts has graciously indulged me.
BTW... you both should click the link, its amazing.
Ummm.. I did...A little U2 goes a long.........way for me.
Morning Mr. Riggs... its Simple Minds... but very similar music style. :O)
Vacelts, thank you, I love that one.
Tom... Alive and Kicking was our Senior Song, so yes I know it well.
azsky13... this one is just for you... :O)
Morning Mr. Riggs... its Simple Minds...

Good choice... Thanks!
*off to search for my rainbow*
You are always more than welcome ma'am :O)
I like I Hope You Dance. That is such an inspirational song. I love the video for it.
It's a little weird, but Stick to Your Guns by Bon Jovi is kind of inspirational to me.
The second verse is my favorite:
So you want to be the big time
Some people have to drag you down
There's no living in the backseat
If you're gonna drive through town
And when you pray for independence
Boy, you better stand your ground
You got to give it all you got now
Or you might get shot down
Fight hard until the battle is won
Then of course the chorus
Stick to your gun
Ain't nobody gonna hurt you, baby
You can go for the trigger
But only if you have to
Aim from the heart
Some will love and some will course you, baby
And you can go to war
But only if you have to
But only if you have to
I have a spot in my heart for Bon Jovi. "Dead or Alive" is my favorite, especially since it became the theme for "Deadliest Catch". And, who hasn't pumped their fist in the air for "Livin' On a Prayer" ... Whooooooooaaaaahhaaahuhhh!
"Livin On a Prayer" is one of my all time favorite songs. :o)
Just off the top of my head I would say Bravado by Rush
Now that is a good one....How did I miss that...
Now after listening to that for some reason I have "Dust in the Wind" in my brain....
Rush and Kansas both have some really inspiring songs. I liked the non-conformity of "Subdivisions," and even though I'm not agnostic, I think "Tom Sawyer" is a cool song.
With Kansas, I have always drawn a lot of strength from "The Wall" (which pre-dated Pink Floyd's own concept album by three years):
To pass beyond is what I seek, I fear that I may be too weak
And those are few who've seen it through to glimpse the other side,
The promised land is waiting like a maiden that is soon to be a bride
The moment is a masterpiece, the weight of indecision's in the air
It's standing there, the symbol and the sum of all that's me
It's just a travesty, towering, blocking out the light and blinding me
I want to seeGold and diamonds cast a spell, it's not for me I know it well
The treasures that I seek are waiting on the other side
There's more that I can measure in the treasure of the love that I can find
And though it's always been with me, I must tear down the Wall and let it be
All I am, and all that I was ever meant to be, in harmony
Shining true and smiling back at all who wait to cross
There is no loss
(Kerry Livgren/Steve Walsh)
Other Kansas songs that inspire: "Crossfire," "No One Together," "Curtain of Iron," "Relentless," "Hopelessly Human," "Incident on a Bridge," and the anthem, "Carry On Wayward Son": "Now your life's no longer empty, surely heaven waits for you."
It would have to be :
Don't give up by Peter Gabriel and Sinead O'connor
Thought Kate Bush sang that with Peter Gabriel? Great song though.
Tracy Chapman - Don't Give Up [with Peter Gabriel] Live
Last I heard there are 18 versions of that one....including the above two. I think, the first was Peter Gabriel and Kate Bush.
Kate Bush sang on the original track.
Sinead O'connor sang with him on the Shaking the Tree Concert and live album of the same.
Either one is fine by me, I have both versions, and the video of the concert with Sinead O'connor.
The vid is fantastic.
Just spotted you there Tedd.
Yes Kate Bush was first.
Eddie... I prefer Kate Bush's version...lol I didn't know this was here... I added that to my list above :O)
Nice heels Tedd :¬)
Thanks Eddie, I like to stay in style.
How about "In Your Eyes" with Yassou N'Dour...I've always thought that was inspiring. "Don't Give Up" is deeply moving to me.
The Sid Vicious version has so much more impact...plus it Rocks!
Nice choice.
especially the version by Cake.
You Lift Me Up - Josh Groban
This song speaks to my heart!
Snow by the Red Hot Chili Peppers

Ted, is the power and popularity getting your head somewhat? Should we lowly souls now bow demurely when we meet you on a thread? :o)
Tedd, I didn't realize you had so much pull.
It helps knowing where the staff parks their cars...those little threats come in handy at times...
Actually I would not have a clue either. One of our office buildings is two blocks from Newsvine and I never have actually visited...Guess I am a snob, but then, they have never visited me either.....
Yeah...Just like Scully...2 hours north of me also, right ?
this is a hard on for me because i listen to varrying styles of music.
so there are many to choose from.
the top 5 would have to be
lady in red,
rock bottom
words are weapons
thugs mansion
and
rocket man
many many others give me many other types of inspiration but those i can count on to give me the 'go get it done' mentality i need to keep it moving and get where i know i need to be
I adore Lady in Red. it is so beautiful and heartwarming. Romance is alive and well!
I know one day, all our scars will disappear, like the stars at dawn
-Thrice "For Miles"
and all of our pain, will fade away when morning comes
and on that day when we look backwards we will see, that everything is changed
and all of our trials, will be as milestones on the way
Hark the herald angels sing
But not for us my dear
I can't recall a single thing
Worth celebrating this year
Watch the clock and pace the floor
Shut my eyes and slam the door
Tear down the lights
We don't need them anymore...
-Jenny Owen Youngs "Things We Don't Need Anymore"
To me though, music is my way of expressing what mood I'm in. Those songs are when I'm in a better mood. When it's bitter though, I end up turning to some unconventional inspiration.
And on that day, all of the stars will swing to set all our wrongs right, and all of our tears and all of our fears will take to flight...
Excellent pick, Justin. If it came down to Thrice, I'd take "The Messenger" off their new one though...
Mark me with fire and send me among the living dead.
They cannot comprehend me. I watched the sickness spread.
How can they hear me with their hearts so hardened? How can they see me when they close their eyes?...
-"The Messenger," Alchemy Index I. Fire
Don't Stop Me Now. I love both the original Queen version and The Vandals cover. And Rise by PIL.
Have you ever heard the Brian May CD, "Back to the Light"? There's some amazing and inspiring songs there, including the title cut, "Driven By You," and "Resurrection".
Me too...I love Bohemian Queen and Radio Gaga. Wonderful.
Queen - I want to break free (ok the music video is a bit crazy)
Tarja Turunen - My little phoenix
Clint Mansell - Lux Aeterna (this is one of many songs that inspired me to teach myself violin)
Verdi - Requiem: Dies Irae (sounds really awesome live)
Tarja Turunen - Die alive (see a pattern?)
John Lennon - Imagine (I can't believe I'm the first to say it)
Joan Baez - Diamonds and rust
"The Show Must Go On" by Queen ... has Freddy Mercury ever sounded more courageous?
These are the days of our lives Also from Innuendo, has he ever looked more courageous. To this day I cannot listen to this song without tearing up.
Who is Carly Smithson?
~ wink ~
Long live Freddy!
I find songs that are backed with an orchestra are so much deeper and inspirational.
Long live Freddy!
Indeed, Tom. What a legacy he has left for us to enjoy!
I find songs that are backed with an orchestra are so much deeper and inspirational.
Hence my long mania for The Electric Light Orchestra (ELO) as well as other prog rock/art pop bands like Queen.
Another good orchestral-sounding prog/pop inspirational song is "Days Like These" by Asia.
The Tarja Turunen album plus my recent trip to see the Milwaukee Symphony Orchestra preform Verdi's Requiem (thanks to my most awesome boyfriend) I was inspired to teach myself how to play the violin. My mother still can't believe that I went out and got one. I can play only eight notes but that's two days of learning.
The violin is an awesome instrument to learn how to play (even if I am a tad partial). I've played it for several years and I'm still amazed at how versatile and beautiful (when played right) it is.
I'm adding 3 of my favorites & some of my favorite lines too
Never Alone - Jim Brickman
May the angels protect you
Trouble neglect you
And heaven accept you when its time to go home
May you always have plenty
The glass never empty
And know in your belly
You¹re never aloneMay your tears come from laughing
You find friends worth having
As every year passes
They mean more than gold
May you win and stay humble
Smile more than grumble
And know when you stumble
You're never alone
In My Daughter's Eyes - Martina McBride
In my daughter's eyes everyone is equal
Darkness turns to light and the
world is at peace
This miracle God gave to me gives me
strength when I am weak
I find reason to believe In my daughter's eyes
My Wish - Rascal Flatts
I hope the days come easy and the moments pass slow,
and each road leads you where you want to go,
and if you're faced with a choice, and you have to choose,
I hope you choose the one that means the most to you.
and if one door opens to another door closed,
I hope you keep on walkin' 'til you find the window,
if it's cold outside,
show the world the warmth of your smile,
but more than anything, more than anything,My wish, for you, is that this life becomes all that you want it to,
your dreams stay big, your worries stay small,
You never need to carry more than you can hold,
and while you're out there getting where you're getting to,
I hope you know somebody loves you, and wants the same things too,
Yeah, this, is my wish.
Three fantastic songs! Brickman's done some really beautiful work, and I also note that you have some good country flavor here. Good stuff!
I like this station, plays all my favorite music plus a few new ones :-)
Angel Eyes is my favorite Brickman song... he ROCKS!
Angel Eyes is a great song. He's just absolutely amazing! I definitely fall back on one of his albums whenever I need to relax.
Sasha, I spent all of my "grown up" college years listening to him while I studied, with two kids and a full time job, it was the only way to wind down enough to relax and read.
I have never heard another pianist like him, nothing so soft and soothing, he is amazing I agree!
From a Distance - Nancy Griffith
I Will Not Be Broken - Bonnie Raitt
The Wood Song - Indigo Girls
Watershed - Indigo Girls
Cool Remove - Shawn Colvin and Mary Chapin Carpenter
There are others, but depending on the mood, any one of these can usually inspire me.
I adore From a Distance, but the version by Bette Middler. So strong and powerful, especially if one really listens to the words.
e.g
From a distance you look like my friend,
even though we are at war.
From a distance I just cannot comprehend
what all this fighting is for. From a distance there is harmony,
and it echoes through the land.
And it's the hope of hopes, it's the love of loves,
it's the heart of every man's
So empowering.

I like both versions. But, I prefer the one done by Nancy Griffith as she recorded it first. I believe it is powerful in it's simplicity. Plus, it easier to sing along to her version. :)
Have you heard Nancy Griffith's version of "Moon River"? Simply lovely ...
Common "Gaining One's Definition", "it's your world"
