The American Idol Elite 8 results show started like a second part to Wednesday's "Idol Give Back," but finished with an elimination that left the audience shocked.

The first half hour was filled with a recap of Wednesday night's 2 ½ hour charity show (cause 150 minutes wasn't enough), a montage video of stars to the Monkee's "I'm a Believer," and an endless amount of celebrities plugging the donation number and website.

One plug even included comments from the three presidential candidates. I loved that McCain took the comic route.
Of course we had the requisite group number to "Shout to the Lord," the "I Just Want to Celebrate" Ford video, and a guest performance.

Last year's winner Jordin Sparks teamed up with Chris Brown to sing "No Air." Then there was the fan presentations promoting Jordin's success.

If you had any doubt that this whole segment was one big Idol promotion, Ryan cleared it up with his comment.

"The message here is that American Idol works."

Finally, we got to the bottom three. No surprise, my pick to go home – David Archuleta – was safe again. Equally expected was Syesha Mercado and Carly Smithson's critical status.

But then we get to the shockers. Kristy Lee is safe and Michael Johns is in trouble.

As I look at the bottom three, I could easily see either Syesha or Carly being eliminated. But then I – and, judging from the stunned hush, the audience – were both amazed to find that Michael is on the chopping block.

If this fact wasn't staggering enough, Ryan adds insult to injury by reminding us that last year they didn't send anyone home during "Idol Gives Back" but Michael is still going home.

Did the record-breaking 31 million votes get it wrong?

This visualization below allows you to see the impact that each user has on the current conversation. The top row contains the group of users who have had the most impact, the 2nd row the group of users who have had the 2nd most impact (et cetera). Users with similar impact are grouped together, and the average score of the group is shown to the left of the group. The author of the article is also shown on the left, in their corresponding group. Each user's score is based on the number of comments the user has made plus the number of votes their comments have received. The scores are calculated relative one another, so while their absolute value is not particularly important, their relative difference does indicate a larger difference in impact on the conversation.

Apparently, you all were shocked too. In Tuesday's poll, not one of you voted to send Michael home. Your bottom three were Syesha, Carly and Jason, with Syesha going home.

Brookie, I don't know I though the Aussie guy was ok but never really overwhelmed me. I'm a fan of Aerosmith's "dream on" and his version of it was just ok. He should have stuck with queen covers, maybe something more off the beaten path too like "Bicycle Race" or any bombastic arena rock hit would've worked to like Quiet Riot's "Cum on Feel the Noise." Also while Kristy Lee has one of the worst voices of the remaining contestants she's choosing excellent songs lately that are easy to sing too so they hide her vocal deficiencies. I recommend she stick with patriotic feel good songs and she could make the top 5. I think the guy with dreads should go home soon. I don't think he's that great, I'd put him on even par with Kristy Lee.

The first part of the season Michael wasn't so impressive, but I thought he was coming into his own over the last few weeks. I had really hoped that he could have hung on for a little longer so we could see what he was capable of.

I agree the good song choices lately are what is keeping Kristy Lee alive.

Was I the only one who thought it a bit cruel when Seacrest goes..."Last season on Idol Gives Back, we did not send anyone home...Michael, you're going home tonight."

I thought he did a good job and I would have liked to have seen Syesha go.

Why bother reminding us of that "feel good" sentiment from last year if you aren't going to reenact it?

It was unnecessary and cruel, especially when everyone was so shocked to see Michael go.

Once again Television Without Pity nails it:

Ryan's like, "Last year we didn't eliminate anybody. Tonight..." No way, you cannot get rid of Michael just when he was getting good! That is awful! Take it back, Seacrest! Take it back! "...We say goodbye to Michael Johns." That was awful. I can't believe they let him twist for 48 hours like that under the assumption that he was going to be Given Back. That SUCKS. I'm really kind of grossed out by that. I mean, it's not like this show is so @!$%#ing legit that they need to twist it up and shoot Bill Adama in the face sometimes to get capital or whatever. It's American Idol: the opposite of keeping it real. That's gross.

You know, I don't normally get weirded out by the actual mechanics of this show, the hoops Ryan makes them jump through. The last time I was yucked out like this was the thing where Bo had to pick between the two groups, and that was half being grossed out by Bo as much as the show, but this is just stupid and @!$%#ty. I wish I had paid more attention to him while he was on the show. That bites. Even Simon's like, "Makes sense, but it sucks because you are awesome and a nice guy." Which for Simon is the equivalent of Paula writhing around on the floor with tears pouring down her face and her dress up over her head. Which, I mean, that's happening too, but the camera's on Simon. Michael goes all out with his singout, doing the catwalk and doing a great job. I hope he doesn't try the falsetto...well, he does, for like one second, and then thinks better of it. Good kid. I would have liked to know more about him than the silly faces and dumb dancing and the tennis obsession. You can tell the judges are torn up about it, sweetly enough, and over in the Temple Grandin Area David Cook is yelling some unrelated @!$%# to somebody off-camera and could care less, which is fun.

I agree 100% that Ryan Seacrest was cruel. The entire presentation of who was going home was bizzarre. Whether you agree or not with who went home, his method wasn't at all what anyone expected. Neither the crowd nor the contestants knew how to react. The long pauses, the whole "last year we didn't send anyone home this week," were over the top. I hate it when they play with people's emotions like that. I guess you should always expect the unexpected, but last night really irritated me. In terms of my personal opinion, I am ready for Carly and Syesha to go. I don't have a personal favorite to win. This year they all seem really ordinary.

Ok so here is my thought on all this! I have lost some respect for the WHOLE American Idol thing. This coming from a #1 fan of the show!! I can't believe that last year they didn't vote anyone off because of Idol gives back and when Ryan says well last year we didn't put anyone off the show but for you Michael it is the end of the road, I was in shock and as well as Michael. You could see the little glimmer of hope in his eye and then Ryan just smashes it to the ground and he almost seemingly enjoys it!! I just felt so bad for him! I thought he was a very talented singer and he is a better singer and performer then for some that I can say that are on the show! I just really am upset...but will I continue to watch Idol? Who knows..... they have some making up to do!!!! As for Kristy Lee Cook I think she is a Carrie Underwood wanna be and there are more deserving to be there then she is. You have to stand out and prove that you can rock it and be a true Idol for America and I am sorry she is not.

I don't think AI realized how shocked/disappointed that 1) they were sending anyone home on Idol Gives Back week (they set a precedent last year) and 2) that is was Michael that was selected.

I am so done with American Idol after that show! Michael Johns is much better than at three others standing there last night. Talent not popular should be the call, but the judges get it wrong sometimes too. That's why I am done with it, I think their comments are made to persuade the voters. It's all fixed to make David Archuletta (sp) win. Is he really an "idol"? I don't think so. If the judges want to have control then award points at the end and add to the call in vote, like Dancing w/the Stars judges do. But they act more intelligent!

Good bye AM

Either that or maybe a limit of votes per telephone line. I could be wrong, but isn't there a limit on how many times you can vote for "So You Think You Can Dance"? And there was a 5 vote limit for "Last Comic Standing".

It was way too early for Michael to be sent home but this happens every year. Did you hear him sing Dolly Parton's "It's All Wrong But It's Alright"? (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3pwStJp3GLM) It was hot. Idol voters sent Chris Daughtry home early and he's doing great so I'm sure Michael will be alright.

Well! I was horrified! Christy Lee reminds me of that awful model-girl last year, hung on for ages for no apparent reason. My top three have been David Cook, Michael Jons and David Archuletta for weeks (in that order). I was shocked at Ryan saying that bit about Michael going home anyway, really tacky. I noticed that Randy was hugging Michael and whispering to him for an extended moment there at the end. Hope he was offering him a record deal. That is one CD I will buy.

American Idol made a poor choice in not having an elimination on Idol Gives Back Week like they did last year. The event being so large and so profound had to have been overwhelming for all the contestants. Regardless, Michael Johns should not have been sent home. He is in the top 4 and it was his first week in the bottom 3. Syesha or Brook should have been sent home if someone needed to be eliminated. It was a bad finale to a terrific program on Wednesday night and a more than worthy cause. Bring Michael Johns back and call it a mistake in judgement by American Idol.
