Gary Dourdan, the smoldering African-American actor who plays investigator Warrick Brown on CSI, has decided to leave the eight-year-old drama. According to an insider, the decision was a mutual one made by the actor and CBS/Paramount, the studio that produces the procedural drama for CBS. CBS/Paramount would not confirm the date of Dourdan's last episode, though it will likely occur in the next month since the actor's contract expires this season. The insider says there's a chance Dourdan will reprise his role with occasional guest appearances in coming seasons.
Could this be the beginning of the end of CSI?
Has it jumped the shark?
Not necessarily. It's just seeing the great exodus of its stars. Not many shows (ER is an exception) survive that.
Vacelts,
I don't think they use the Dourdan character enough. It sort of seems like they don't know what to do with it anymore and haven't developed any decent story arcs. There was a situation earlier in the season where all of a sudden the character was portrayed as having difficulties with prescription drugs. Where did that come from? it seems to have disappeared as quickly as it appeared. Perhaps the writers were just getting ready to explain his leaving the show or infrequent appearances.
While I always find Gil interesting, I am dead weary of the Marg Helgenberger character.
I agree. We don't see enough of Warrick. I don't mind Marg Helgenberger's character when she's not all whiny.
I think it's first few seasons were its best. I think it jumped the shark around the time of the Tarantino-directed episode. But that's just me and it doesn't stop me from watching the shows via dvd (I'm on season 7)
The first few seasons were the best. I think it started to lose some of its charm when they started dividing the team up.
I hope he gets work somewhere else. I never felt like the show utilized his character very well.

Is it ok to mention how gorgeous he is?
Heh. Sure... I don't like him for the same reason obviously, but I think he has a lot of presence, and he could easily be the main lead in a series. One of the things that I think makes him interesting is that while he appears to be serious and holds your attention, you also get the sense that he could play an intellectual very well. You get the sense he is intelligent.
They really could have done a lot more with him.
I agree that they could have done a lot more with his character. At one time I read that they were going to have a romance with him and Catherine, but that never really materialized. Then they gave him a wife, but she seemed to be something they forgot about until she divorced him.
I like the actor and hope to see him again in another series too.
Sad. I think the original CSI is a league apart from its spinoffs, CheeSIe Miami & NY.
On a related subject, is anyone else disappointed with the quality of the writing in the shows affected by the writers strike? Cold Case used to be one of the better shows out there, but boy has it fallen from greatness since its return.
Is it me or is the writing or acting in CSI Miami rather poor? You have H saying the same things all the time like "That it is" or "You'll be the first to know". The lines don't seem to flow that well and there seems to be awkward pauses.

I absolutely cannot watch CSI Miami anymore. When the show started out and it was just David Caruso posing and preening (and he is the king of posing and preening and fun to watch), it was fine. Now, they've all got these weird quirky personalities. It's like being locked in a super colorful loony bin.
I opted out permanently after the show where triplets colluded to commit murder. Done and dusted.
The original CSI is the only one that I watch regularly. I can't stand David Caruso so I only watch CSI Miami when I'm really desperate. I liked the idea of CSI New York, but I just couldn't get into it. Nothing really set it apart from every other cop show set in New York.

I think that these first episodes were rushed. There was a lot of pressure to get something out right away. Hopefully you'll see an improvement -- probably just in time for the summer break.
I like CSI NY, but part of that is I like Gary Sinise.

As we give reviews to each of the CSI shows (laugh) - I really don't care much for Sinese as he is very wooden, but he is tolerable. It's the rest of the characters who draw one into the show. The guy who plays Carmine - he's very New Yawk/New Joisey. I also like the character of Lindsay and I like their ME.
I agree that Gary Sinise make CSI NY
I still like all the CSIs, but I think they are meeting heavy competition in Criminal Minds and Dexter. I find Bones quite watchable too. I agree that Cold Case has lost something recently, ho hum.
I love Bones.
Boy, I'm outta touch. I forgot there was a C.S.I.: NY.
But I've only seen the original, and seldom do that anymore.
Sometime procedural crime dramas can wear on you.
I agree with most of the sentiments above re: David Caruso. My wife and I refer to CSI: Miami as CSI: Poseur. No other show on tv, let alone of the CSIs, features such ridiculous strutting by its male lead. This season, when the commercials kept hinting that one more star from that show was going to get axed, we kept hoping it was going to be the guy who wears his shades indoors, who always stands in profile, who whips out his gun in every episode, who rarely dons a lab coat, etc., etc. Give me the Gil Grissom's coolness and eclectic knowledge base, or Mac's reassurance, anyday. (However, I am glad the producers brightened up the color scheme after the first few episodes of CSI:NY. If you look back, you'll notice those first few eps had a depressingly dark blue tone.)
As for Gary Dourdan leaving--that's the first I'd heard--damn! I'll miss him.
CSI, the original, is still by far my favorite and I find it a little disheartening that it's starting to lose original cast members -- first Jorja Fox (although I wasn't upset by that exit) and now Dourdan. I hope it's not a sign that the end is near for the series.
I'd probably tune in to Miami if it wasn't for Caruso. I tried for awhile but his antics just were too over the top for me.
Warrick Brown has always been my favourite character on the original CSI. It just isn't the same without him. Gary Dourdan played him kind of dark & brooding but very intelligent, honorable, competent & with a solid decency. As handsome a hunk as he is, it was never even alluded to in the program; as in he wasn't treated like a piece of beefcake. I didn't know he was leaving the show so I was really upset when I saw the season closer & kept hoping throughout the hiatus that he would survive the attack. I was really disappointed when I saw that he didn't. I have heard rumors that he has a drug problem & if true, I sincerely hope he is able to rise above it.
I have heard anymore about his status since he left the show, but like you I hope he's getting any help he needs.
