Who should go home

Top 7 with Mariah Carey.
A diva known for her power ballads mentored the Top 7 on American Idol tonight. What can we expect from Mariah Carey's efforts - second-rate versions of her hits or just karaoke hell?
At the thought of watching tonight's episode of the competition, a quote from my two-year-old son comes to mind - "I'm scared." Of course, his purpose is to avoid bedtime. Mine is to avoid a boring night of mediocre ballads.
And for the most part, my fears were confirmed with a night of performances that will be - thankfully - quickly forgotten.
Only one performance stood out. Let's just say that I can't wait for David Cook to have an album out so I can buy it. The man just rocked Mariah Carey with a version of "Always Be My Baby" that stood out tonight as the only truly original performance. Cook definitely has the makings of a star.
It became clear early on that the women were at a disadvantage tonight. The men were forced to personalize songs normally sung and/or penned by a female; whereas, the ladies were doomed to a direct comparison to the legend that is Mariah. So I'll continue with my review by gender.
Also adding a bit of originality to his performance was Jason Castro who put a little reggae twist to "I Want to Cry." The version had a cool, funky little feel to it, but it wasn't anything that left me wanting more. The question is whether it was enough to keep Jason alive for another week.
David Archuleta's rendition of "When You Believe" was very pretty, but as with most of his performances I'm just not taken with it. But since Archuleta is a favorite, I doubt even the dreaded first up spot tonight will diminish his standings with the powers that be. As for me, I'm no bigger a fan of Archuleta after this performance.
Topping my list for the ladies is Kristy Lee Cook, not because she blew me away, but because she was really the only female to personalize her performance. I didn't expect Kristy Lee to do well on Mariah Carey night, but she's proving to be a pretty smart girl. She put a nice country twist to "Forever" and it worked pretty well for her.
I've come to the conclusion that instruments are a crutch for Brooke White. Whether it's to combat stage fright or something else, I'm not sure. But what I can't decide is if it's helping her or not. Brookie is another one who I didn't expect to stand out with these power ballads. However, I think she did the best she could with "Hero."
Parts of Carly Smithson's "Without You" stood out because I think we got to see a little bit of her personality - or maybe her potential - in them. But these glimpses were few and far in between. Overall, the performance was average. It would have been fine if we were listening to Carly at the local pub, but it lacked star quality.
I like Syesha Mercado when she does songs that let us see something besides the power of her voice. For that reason, I liked the beginning of "Vanishing" the best. Then she went into her runs and the big notes which are technically well done, but aren't impressive anymore because she does them every week.
Except for David C., I wasn't overly impressed with anyone tonight (not that I actually expected to be with this theme). I would be okay with anyone but David C. in the bottom three based on tonight's performances.
If I had to choose, my picks would be Archuleta (I know, I dreaming), Syesha and Carly. I really want Archuleta to go home, but realistically I think it'll be Syesha.

David Cook was amazing this week, which is good because he wasn't up to his usual levels the past two weeks. I'm really excited to see what he can do with Andrew Loyd Webber and Neil Diamond. Also, I noticed that he did not appear the least bit smug this week.
I actually really liked Brook's performance. I really like that she kept the accompaniment simple with just her piano. She didn't make the mistake she made with "Every Breath You Take" in bringing the band in halfway through. Seeing her in the video with Mariah I was actually hoping she'd do the song with the acoustic guitar rather than the piano. I feel that would have been more original and even stronger.
Jason's was ok, and a bit different, but it kinda bored more.
Syesha was Syesha.
Kristy Lee Cook is definitely much improved in just the past few weeks, but she still doesn't live up to the levels as the others.
Carly's was pretty bad. She didn't have the voice to sing the song the way she did. I really think Carly should have just made a Heart song out of her Mariah song. She could have rocked it even more than David, and that would have easily suited her voice and talents far better. Instead she seemed to be singing Karaoke.
And then there is David A. He's the ultimate Karaoke singer. I still don't even get what people see in his voice, as it seems pretty monotone and congested to me, not to mention that he has no idea how to work the microphone at all. David A continuously makes p-pops, more so at the start of his songs, but they are a problem them the judges continue to ignore. If someone would teach him that singing into the microphone when it is an inch or two away is not a good idea, he might rid himself of that problem.
Only one performance stood out. Let's just say that I can't wait for David Cook to have an album out so I can buy it.
I said that same thing just last night while watching. Over all I was impressed with the seven, singing any song associated with MC would be difficult. None were horrible as all are pretty talented. That said, I think Carly (that was my favorite MC song) would be better after a few pints, at least if she didn't improve, I'd care less. I don't like Syesha, I just don't connect with her at all. Kristy,... Just was out of her element. I was more focused on the 'Diva Dress' than on what she was singing. It just wasn't her. David A. hasn't progressed at all in this competition and I don't think he ever will. He has only sung one song, the words just keep changing each week. I actually liked Brook and Jason this week, both did "their thing" as Mr. Jackson would say and it was good, not great, but good.
Back to Big Head Dave C! Was it me or did he look like he was ready to cry when he got the judges feedback? This was a great performance and I hope his album is out soon.
I actually loved Jason's song - I felt he made it his own and not just a Mariah Carey cover. I'm disliking David A. with every week though - I love ballads, but even I have my limits. He's boring, dull, and I think his personality doesn't shine through at all. I think if he was older and didn't have the teenage female support he wouldn't get nearly as much praise.
I have to agree Brooke uses the instruments as a crutch. After she did that ugly sway-dancing during "Here Comes the Sun" I've noticed she can either stand still or sit on stage - I really don't think she has a clue about commanding a stage presence.
Carly and Syesha were both okay for me. They each had portions of the songs that were good, but that's it. I think David C. was the clear winner, but I don't think Kristy Lee did too bad - I liked it and I don't think she'll be eliminated this week.
I think Syesha, Carly, and either Jason or Kristy will be in the bottom three with Syesha going home.
