The Top 6

advertisement

Tonight Andrew Lloyd Webber helped the Top 6 bring Broadway to American Idol. But were the performances music to our ears or a heartbreaking tragedy?

While I personally love musicals, I'm not sure that their songs are appropriate fodder for Idol competitors. These songs are made for a certain type of voice that clearly does not include all the contenders. But I guess you can say the same thing of most of the themes.

Either way, I'm glad that they waited until this late in the competition to bring in Lord Andrew as a mentor. As expected, the result of his work with the contestants was a mixed bag.

Lord Andrew predicted that Syesha Mercado would bring down the house and I have to agree that she topped the night. She finally showed us some personality. She was delightful, entertaining and captivating. Her performance of "One Rock & Roll Too Many" was by far her best. And if this was Broadway Idol, Syesha would be the clear winner.

Give Lord Andrew another point for convincing Carly Smithson to pick "Jesus Christ Superstar." It was definitely a better song choice for her. During a couple points in the song, Carly sounded like she was shouting. Otherwise, she sounded good and actually looked like she was enjoying the performance.

On the other hand, it was nice to see a softer side of David Cook tonight. I liked his version of "The Music of the Night." Sure, it doesn't stand out as his most memorable or most original performance. But considering that I in no way expected musicals to be Cook's forte, I was impressed with his effort.

Conversely, David Archuleta did not impress me. I've never been a big Archuleta fan. Unfortunately his rendition of the traditionally female-sung "Think of Me" did nothing to change that opinion. I agree with Simon that the performance was pleasant but easily forgotten. However, despite my criticisms I won't be surprised to see him sail through to the next week.

Then there was Brooke White. I liked that we got to see her emotionally connect to "You Must Love Me," but I thought the performance itself was average. I'm concerned about her restarting the song. This week is the second time that Brooke has stopped and restarted a song. It clearly shows her lack of experience. And this late in the game, forgetting the lyrics is going to hurt her.

Finally, I never expected Jason Castro to blow me away on Broadway night and he most definitely lived up to that expectation. I was not surprised to learn that he wasn't familiar with musicals, but the fact that he didn't realize that "Memory" was sung by a cat (a hard guess considering the name of the musical is Cats) only added to the pure torture of my ears. Jason should be voted off on this performance alone.

My picks for the bottom three are Archuleta (I know it's a vain hope), Brooke and Jason with Jason going home.

This visualization below allows you to see the impact that each user has on the current conversation. The top row contains the group of users who have had the most impact, the 2nd row the group of users who have had the 2nd most impact (et cetera). Users with similar impact are grouped together, and the average score of the group is shown to the left of the group. The author of the article is also shown on the left, in their corresponding group. Each user's score is based on the number of comments the user has made plus the number of votes their comments have received. The scores are calculated relative one another, so while their absolute value is not particularly important, their relative difference does indicate a larger difference in impact on the conversation.

What are your bottom three? Who did you think had the best night?

I don't know about the bottom three, but Jason Castro should go home. He did a really bad job, the worst of the night. I thought Brooke's restart started a little rough, but for me it picked up around the middle. Loved David Cooke, he really did a wonderful job in my opinion.

I liked Webber as a guest mentor. He actually seemed to know how to bring out a better performance from the singers (shocking I know) and he was actually honest in his appraisals of the singer. Usually the mentors just spout some feel good bull@!$%# about all of the singers. I liked when the camera switched to him in the audience after David A. sang. He did not look happy.

I agree that Webber was a pretty good mentor. And I give him bonus points for actually being there to see his prodigies perform. Most mentors just watch it on TV/tape (if at all).

Yeah, after weeks and weeks of boredom Syesha finally showed something. Lucky for it it'll keep her alive for another week. Or maybe not, apparently being first isn't good for your fate...

It's a pity but probably one of Jason or Brook will go this week as they were clearly the worst performances of the night. I thought David A was quite boring yet again, but with 2 positive votes from judges, the voters will ignore Simon.

I really liked how Andrew Lloyd Webber really got in there and gave great advice. Since he's a composer he knows how to work with musicians to get the best out of them. Other musicians like Mariah and Dolly know what works for them, but can't help others all that much, plus they tended to be too positive and not critical enough. Andrew was willing to straight out tell Carly that she picked the wrong song, and she owes him as her first choice would have led to her being sent home this week. Instead, she really rocked "Jesus Christ, Superstar" though she did get a little shouty during the chorus.

David cook was solid, nothing amazing, but it was nice seeing him being more conventional and letting his voice carry him this week, because it worked.

Well know we know what Syesha should do when she finally gets kicked off Idol. She should head to Broadway.

Yes, Webber improved Carly. I think he helped Syesha and Brooke as well. He definitely had better feedback for the contestants than most mentors.

So listening to David Cook's performance again, it was decent enough and somewhat entertaining, but comparing it to professional performances of that song and it is really a weak imitation.

What's also weird in listening to Syesha again is that she actually does a pretty crappy vocal job, missing quite a few notes. And yet because she finally showed personality that we didn't hate, we didn't care.

I'm almost certain that Brook is going this week. The whole scene from after her song was so surreal and awkward. It's like a war movie seen when a soldier has been shot a dozen times, but his buddies are telling bad awkward jokes to try to keep his spirits up and ignore the fact that he's a complete goner. Everyone on stage knew that Brook was done, except for Ryan. Usually Brook would respond to every little thing the judges would say, but last night she was eerily quite. The judges were just throwing out half hearted comments, because they knew, and the knew that she knew that she was completely toast after last night.

I wouldn't be surprised if Brooke is gone. Mistakes like that at this point are costly.

And you are right about Syesha's vocals, but finally she was entertaining so I didn't care.

Two restarts for Brooke now? It's just too unprofessional. That's not going to fly in a real concert. It's okay if it happens once but it left a bad taste in my mouth. And Brooke used to be my favourite. She's really degenerated. I think her and Jason don't get with only 6 left average performances won't fly.

I personally didn't like David Cook's pick, I felt it was not a great pick for him. I'm in the Simon camp I guess - he did the best he could but it was pretty forgettable.

Unfortenately, I think Jason has proved Simon's point that he doesn't seem to put all that much effort, because even I, with extremely limited musical experience, could tell it was bad.

David A. bores again. Syesha obviously should follow a career to broadway, it suits her, and I think if she's truthful with herself she loves it more than American Idol popish stuff.

My (ideal) bottom three: David A, Jason, and Brooke with Brooke packing her bags.

I wouldn't be upset if it was Brooke who was voted off. But out of her and Jason, I think that she tries more so that's why I picked Jason over her. I think Syesha saved herself for a week.

Syesha is a whole lot of pzazz!, taking flight with the melodies, traveling the course from start to finish with smooth tenderness in that pretty red dress with a pretty, on screen presence....destined for greatness. Screen and stage ready! Music to my ears!

I really liked Syesha going into the Top 24. Then she started to bore me with the same types of ballads week after week. But I have to say that she really stood out last night and made me remember why I liked her to begin with. She should definitely consider Broadway when she's done with Idol.

She started singing and then clearly forgot the next word. She said sorry, signaled for the band to stop and then started again. She did it gracefully, but the competition is getting to intense to let a mistake like that slide.

You can watch it here.

Syesha is a really good bluesy singer. She needs the upbeat songs to show her best. David Cook has a narrow range of songs that he can do well. When he is in that genre, he is excellent. David Archuleta has been the cute kid for too long. He will need to take some lessons to really develop as a professional singer. He does not have the humility to do that. Jason Castro is another that does not have the sense (humility) to accept constructive criticism. He is destined to be a wedding singer or the entertainment director on a cruise ship. Carly has a chance to be the next Cher. Decent singing ability with an attitude to go with it.

Did you find it painful to watch him try and keep his eyes open (per Webber's advice) during his performance this week?

I'm not sure it's him that doesn't have the humility -- more like his father.

David Cook will win this season and deservedly so. I think Davd Archuleta can do no wrong in the judges eyes but then again Melinda Doolittle was in the same position last season and that did not stop her getting voted off. Archuletas performances are getting repetitive and monotonous and his time is almost up.

I have been less than impressed with the choice of this year's guest instructors. These songs were all wrong for idol.....I think the bottom 3 will be: Brooke, Syesha, and Jason....all 3 are very vulnerable ---though of the 3 I like Brooke best.

I think the song choices for both last week and this week were pretty limiting for the contestants, but I think that Andrew Lloyd Webber was one of the bettor mentors. I really liked how he worked with the contestants to bring out the best in them.

vacelts - I think Andrew Loyed Webber was great in his mentoring----it's just broadway songs (as much as I LOVE broadway musicals) seemed a bit out of sync with the songs I'd like to see done on American Idol......I was a bit bored last night. I agree Brooke is too nervous.....the starting stopping thing she has done twice now is just not acceptable. Though from the outset I never thought she'd win I was hoping she'd make top 4....

Either the producers are running out of ideas or people just aren't willing to mentor this season. Broadway musicals weren't the best option.

I also thought Mariah Carey was an interesting choice for mentor given that every time anyone ever tried to pull off one of her songs in the past they got slapped by the judges for even trying.

I think David C. is by far the best Idol has ever had. He is the complete package. David A is good but a needs to mature and get a little more versatile. JASON GO HOME!!!. Can't stand his wimpy way of singing he has no personality. Carly is great and Syesha is OK something about her bugs me can't put my finger on it. Some times she is very good and other times a bomb, she's not consistent. Brooke also needs to go home her time is up.
