Goodbye Carly!
Popularity won out over talent as the results of the American Idol Top 6 sent the Irish rose Carly Smithson home after Tuesday's solid performance of "Jesus Christ Superstar."
I would have really liked to hear Andrew Lloyd Webber's thoughts on tonight's elimination. He, after all, was the one the mentor that has really provided the contenders with the best and most honest advice. And we saw firsthand how his advice improved the performances of those that took it and how those that didn't resulted in a train wreck (I'm looking at you Jason Castro).
Except for the shocking news of the Bottom 2, Webber stole the results show. First he performed with the contenders in the opening number "All I Ask of You." Then he bantered with Ryan and the judges with wit and graciousness.
While the theme of musicals was a poor choice for the contestants, Idol was all the better for having Webber as a mentor. And to top it off, he saved us from another dreaded round of call in questions.
So how is it that the two competitors that brought down the house with performances that embraced Webber's advice ended up in jeopardy tonight?
No one expected either of the Davids to be anything but safe this evening - Cook because he's talented and Archuleta because he's a favorite.
But then that's when the results when awry. First false-start Brooke White was declared safe, sending Syesha Mercado to the stools. Then Jason's charm won him a spot in safety despite his disastrous performance of "Memory" that left fans wanting to forget and Carly in peril.
Even before the elimination was announced, I was shaking my head and mumbling "this is all wrong." Last week or the week before, I would have gladly said goodbye to either Syesha or Carly, but after Tuesday's performances - their best by far - I'm stunned.
But alas, there is no fairy tale ending for Carly.

What is going on? How could Jason still be on this show? Who is voting for him? He needed to go loooong ago. Help. Carly was really in her element this week. I am sure she will land on her feet someplace, hopefully with a cover for that tatoo on her arm.
Ugh. Jason needs to go about right now. I'm banking he's the next to go. I just don't see why it would be Carly and not Brooke? What the heck?
I think Carly got robbed! Jason or Brooke should have gone. Are they going to be the Sanjayas of this season?
I was kind of pissed about how it all went down. Neither Brooke NOR Jason in the bottom two? I feel like there are two people are safe another week, when one of them really should have gone home. I felt for the first time in a few weeks both Carly and Syesha were good and having both of them in the bottom two reminds me of how much of a popularity contest it becomes, particularly at this stage.
I agree with you both. Carly and Syesha should not have been in the bottom two last night and Carly definitely should not have gone home.
This should definitely be American Idol's last season. It has completely broken down to a popularity contest and not a singing contest. I guess if you're a blond bimbo who crys all the time and can't remember the lyrics then you're safe and if you're an idiot with dreadlocks who spends 10 minutes a week preparing for the show and is total monotone then you're safe as well.
Very very sad!!!!
Yep. They really need to do something about it.
This is just another example of "Idol" not counting all the votes or only counting those of the people "they" want to win. The winner has already been determined.
I think it's fixed.
Brooke should go, it's boring to see and hear her, same crying scaring face and voice every week asking for pity,..., looks like the competition changed into a charity one: keep the stupid to don't hurt their feeling.
I think you're right. Paula's fluff comments get really annoying. I really hate it when she makes one after Simon has given his opinion. Why can't she and Randy just shut up and let Simon talk? He doesn't do that to them.
Well, she deserves it. :oP
At this point in the show people have already picked their favorites and are sticking to them. Even though they are better singers, Carly and Syesha apparently don't have a large fan base. People remain loyal to their favorites whether they do well or not. For me, even though Syesha probably has the best voice in the competition, I find her a bit conceited and that puts me off. It has nothing to do with her talent. That may not be fair, but that's the way it is.
The song is called "Memory," not "Memories." I was glad to see Carly go. She annoyed the crap out of me. Then she topped it off by taking credit for deciding on her own to switch from "All I Ask of You" to "Superstar," even though it was shown for all the viewers to see that ALW is the one who convinced her she should. I voted for Jason because I think he's talented and unique. David Cook is good as well--all of the rest of them annoy me.
But I will give everyone this: I was shocked that Brooke was not in the bottom two, let alone the one to go home. I used to like her--then she got extremely irritating and her singing started going way downhill to boot. But Syesha definitely didn't deserve to go home, so I'm glad she stayed.
Anyone else noticed how Carly's Irish accent got thicker and thicker as the show went on? I guess she decided people find accents charming.
I just couldn't vote for Jason, he hasn't grown at all on that show. He's had some dreadful (no pun intended) performances on the show. As well as the fact that he basically can only manage within his range, whereas the others show the capability to go beyond their comfort zone, which Jason can't quite get out of. Just my opinion.
Jason has been coasting for weeks now.
This is without a doubt the worst, stupidest Idol Season season I've ever endured. After last nights resluts I'll likely stop watching it as it's become nothing more then a pouplarity contest. Listening to Brooke and Jason is about as entertaining as listening to paint dry...they are both single dimensional and very boring. All the others have attempted ballads and upbeat tunes throughout their performances while these two perform nothing but elevator music. How about amending the voting resluts so the judges can submit some portion of the final vote. Whether you like the judges or not, their eclectic mix would pbovide some balance to the crappy voting results taking place this year.

I would agree that this is the worst season of Idol. The only person I want to see in the finale with David Cook at this point is Syesha. But considering that she is in the bottom three nearly every week, I don't think she is going to make it that far. At the rate this season is going we may not even see David Cook in the finale. Can you imagine a David A/Jason finale (or substitute Brooke for one of them), ugghhhhh.
A voting system that they should consider is have America choose the bottom 3 and then let the judges determine who is going home. This way America still has some say in who stays but the judges have a better feel of who has more talent rather than who is more popular. (Maybe they should just let Randy and Simon pick since Paula wouldn't want to vote anyone off). I think Jason and Brooke would have been gone weeks ago had this voting system been in place.

The problem with that is that it would become Simon deciding who gets sent home. Even when asked if America made the right choice of the bottom three each week, Paula never gives a real answer and instead gives some fluff like everyone is wonderful. I don't think Randy or Paula would ever actually vote for someone to be sent home.
I'm actually all for the idea of the judges having to determine who's gonna go home among the bottom 3. I know many people don't like Simon, but it doesn't erase the fact that he has the right standards when it comes to music. He sticks to the point that American Idol is a singing contest and not just a popularity show. And if you don't want the good singers out of the competition then he'll be the man to save them.
Randy is actually starting to think like Simon when it comes to vocal standards and musical performances. As for Paula, I have never really thought much about her judging because they all seem to be the same thing coated by different descriptions. But if the rules say that they'll have to choose, then they will choose.
It almost seems mean to keep Brook in the competition at this point. She was clearly stunned that she wasn't in the bottom two, and I just don't think she can emotionally handle performing on this show any more.
A few weeks ago I would have picked Carly as the contestant most likely to completely break down on stage, but now it's going to be Brook.
Carly Simon, to whom Brooke has been compared, has reportedly suffered from severe stage fright for her entire career.
Maybe Brooke should talk to Carly Simon for tips on how to combat it.
she has at times poked herself in the hand with safety pins. On one memorable occasion that she recounted to John Lahr of The New Yorker, she asked her entire band's horn section to spank her just before the curtain rose. http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/20631646/
I am puzzled by comments from people who don't think that David Archuleta is talented. The judges think that he is, so what is the deal? Are they wrong? He is constantly praised by them. And I am tired of everyone thinking that David Cook is so perfect. He is 25 as compared with David Archuleta's being only 17. He has sung a few songs that I hated, like Little Sparrow, but he still gets complimented on them. He is fun to watch, but David A. is the one I love to listen to. Actually, David Cook was also great to listen to this week. (I am not a teenager.)
Jason Castro has the entire town of Rockwall, Texas, voting for him, and probably all the students at Texas A&M University. He seems like a really sweet guy, but he is not that good a singer. Better than the average guy, but not great. Also, I hate the dreadlocks but that does not influence my opinion of his talent.
The judges think that he is, so what is the deal?
Paula thinks everyone is great so her opinion doesn't count, and Randy is also very unlikely to criticize. The only judge who ever seems to give an honest opinion is Simon, and while Simon has praised David A at times, he's also called some of this performances theme-parky as well.
He is 25 as compared with David Archuleta's being only 17.
So? There are no handicaps for age here, no bonus points. This is all about what they can do now. If David A wasn't ready at age 17, then he should have waited a few more seasons.
I knew Carly wasn't going to win the whole thing but I had her in my final four so I'm saddened by her going home earlier than I'd expected. She had that great big voice but I agreed with judges who often criticized her song selections. This past week was an exception to that rule because she nailed Jesus Christ Superstar (finally the right song!) and looked just adorable in her outfit. I think the tattoos (particularly her husband's) also had a negative effect. Too bad.
vacelts - I guess just like in politics it all depends on voting blocs.......it would appear that more young girls who think jason is hot are calling in (particularly when they must know based on sheer talent he is vulnerable).....then were folks coming out for carly.
Personally, I rather see tattoos than dreadlocks. Dreadlocks are tangles masses of hair that often have dust and other icky things in them. They can't be hygienic. YUCK!
I saw an episode of What Not to Wear with a woman with dreadlocks. They were so gunky and nasty the hairstylist almost wrecked his scissors on them. That's all I can think about whenever I see Jason.
I saw that episode. I thought it was revolting when the stylist (can't think of his name for the life of me) was cutting them off and there was all that crap in them.
Vacelts, I also have a tattoo and want another one.
It's Celtic-ish vine design called "Girlie Bits". I bought the artwork from Pat Fish at luckyfishart.com. She's got some amazing Celtic knot designs. The tat is on my lower back. I'm thinking of getting one of her butterfly designs on the back of my shoulder, but where I can cover it up.
OMG who would have thought it .... Carly definitely performed well enough to have stayed another week. Jason on the other hand... If AI is turning into a popularity contest instead of a vocal one then it's time for it to say BYE BYE BABY!. Where ever you go Carly I wish you the best, you earned it.
I'm not that shocked that Carly went home. She's probably the best singer there, but she has this harsh tone in her voice, like she's trying too hard to impress. The lyrics to Jesus Christ Superstar was probably the last straw.
Two reasons she went home:
1. I think people are missing the "song choice" issue here. "Jesus Christ Superstar" is a song that SOUNDS like you're mocking and yelling at Jesus Christ.
For those who don't understand the really brilliant satirical social comment that AL Webber was making, they probably found the song offensive and sacreligious. I'd bet good money that's why she lost a lot of political correctness votes.
2. It also doesn't help that Carly always looks like a cross between angry and completely insane when she closes her eyes, snarls to expose her extra-long two front teeth,, and then opens her eyes super-wide, giving the "crazy eyes"... She's very hard to watch.
You nailed it....
I agree, JCS still engenders anger from those that cannot get past the title to actually listen to the lyrics.
If Jason of Brook don't go soon I will be watching something else. Who are the people voting for them?. The same thing happened last year with Sanjaya fortunately he left just has I was about to give up on the taste of the American people.
I like Jason. I still can't stand Syesha (who always seems to give an arrogant look of disbelief when the judges say she needs to show emotion or has finally shown emotion or whatever) who seems to overreach when going for the songs that require Whitney/Mariah/Celine pipes to pull it off. Could care less that Carly when home and wouldn't care if Brooke went home. David Cook is going to be successful regardless of whether he wins or not. I JUST CAN'T STAND DAVID ARCHULETA.
I also see a 2 davids finale.....and if that's the case I'm voting DAVID COOK all the way.
Carly made a couple of strategic mistakes......(1) The tattoo. No way are the bulk of the voters going to approve of a woman (or man, but especially a woman) with a big tattoo on her arm. (2) She sang a song with a repeated chorus of "Jesus Christ.....Jesus Christ". That turned off a big voting block.
Otherwise, she was Irish (AMERICAN Idol....remember?) and she always talked over the judges and back-talked Simon. Big turn-offs.
David Archeluta is a little boy with absolutely no sex appeal, ala Clay Aiken and Taylor Hicks, with no chance of sustaining a career after this show. He is exactly the kind of winner (and he will win) this show does not need.
He has "Age Appeal". A few more years he will be just another lounge singer off main street in Las Vegas. Maybe he has a chance as an opening act in Branson.
Brooke is still around cause she's the only one left that the "hillbilly" vote can support.
You know the voters on this show could be divided demographically......young girls, old grandmas (Clay and Taylor's fans), country music fans. urban voters, etc. Every year a country singer or two goes a long ways (Carrie maybe being the biggest star this show may have produced...). This year there is no country singer, with Brooke and the departed Keri being the closest. So those country fans are gonna rally around someone, this year their only choice is Brooke. She has yet to show any vocal range other than a narrow folksy style. Maybe Seyesah is getting the urban vote.
Clay Aiken actually has a very good career going for him. His albums sell well and he's on Broadway. Taylor Hicks is the one who has no career. The guy was touring at Six Flags parks!
I am from the heart of Country Music. Kristy Lee Cook is country. Brooke is city.
Brooke is still around cause she's the only one left for the "hillbilly" vote.
Briggs - I thought she was getting the "pretty blonde" vote myself. But I do think her voice is very sweet....not the best of the best but she was always in my top 4.
That's why I hate these "theme" nights. It doesn't give the contestants the chance to do what it is they do best. Can you imagine Taylor Hicks trying to sing a Webber song? That was what was impressive about David Cook....he did that song straight-up and nailed it. I'd like to see Brooke do any set of 3 songs she wants to do just to hear her for who she really is....then we'd know how to rank her.
I have to say I was shocked. I am not a Syesha fan per se, but thought her performance this week glowed in the dark. Carly was always a fav of mine, and I do think that people were dumb enough to not get that the lyrics of the song were a social commentary of 30+ years ago. I don't like the tattoos either, but didn't let them bother me. The worst of it is the fact that neither Brooke or Jason should be there, neither of them has any star quality, or even much talent. They are probably very nice people, but that doesn't sell CDs. I will still watch the show, but I am concerned about any validity it has. My guess is that 99% of the vote comes from people under age 21, and doesn't vaguely demonstrate the type of music that the majority of the population enjoys. Sad.
Between Top Chef and American Idol last night I was almost in tears (okay - it was because I had a bad day, but it didn't help).
I honestly believe that Carly was voted off because she chose to sing "Jesus Christ Superstar" which is an incredibly controversial song to many, more conservative, groups. And I also believe that she had too much personality for many. Brooke stayed because she appeals to exactly the group that is repulsed by Carly. Jason stayed because he's "dreamy" (my boyfriend said that - not me).
The only hope I have is that David Cook stays in it longer - he really has star quality (even though he's been getting more and more arrogant as the weeks go by).
I might wonder a little about your boyfriend if I were you.
Wonder a little - I wonder a lot! Hehe. My mom always wanted me to marry a gay man.
Hehe. My college roommate was this gorgeous, sweet, funny gay man who did the dishes, loved all the things I did, and just made me happy. So my mom wanted me to marry him - and, bonus for her, we'd never have sex. I don't know if she thought I'd just have a grandbaby for her through immaculate conception, or if she had given up all hope of me ever producing grandbabies for her.
While still reeling from the shock of last night, I agree with most of the opinions here: Jason and Brooke are the true losers that have to go. The only comfort in this is that we all know it will ultimately come down to the two David's and the other three will be gone anyway, it's just too bad that we have to look at and unfortunately listen to the blonde pouty face and clueless dorm room minstrel again.
