The Top 5
Tonight Neil Diamond offered the Top 5 American Idol contestants variety with songs from some 25 albums to choose from. In fact, the contenders each got to select two Diamond songs, but did they make the right selection?
Out of all the mentors, I was looking forward to Diamond the most because of the number of great songs that he had to offer the Top 5. However, I think the results were a mixed bag. Only one competitor stood out with both songs. And the other four made one performance better than the other - for two it was the first song and for two it was the second song.
Leading the pack tonight was David Cook with two of Diamond's lesser known songs.
Picking the more obscure "I'm Alive" was a smart choice for Cook. It allowed him more flexibility with the song and less comparison with the original. As always, I was impressed with his performance. However, I'm wondering if there was any significance in this song choice for him?
Cook steps up to the plate again outdoing his first outing of the night with a version of "All I Really Need is You" that not only rocked but showcased his ability to truly own a song. I'd never heard this song before, but I'd buy Cook's single.
The girls didn't do too shabby this week either although I think their second songs were much better matches for them.
"I'm a Believer" wasn't a bad song choice for Brooke White. I think she started out a little tentative, but picked it up towards the end, looking like she truly was enjoying the performances. Unfortunately, I can't help but compare her to the Monkees' version and she didn't quite measure up.
However, "I Am ... I Said" was a much better song choice for Brooke. It seemed to fit her personality and her voice much better. I think it was one of her better performances and reminded me of what I like about Brooke. I understand that she wrote a critical lyric on her hand to prevent a reoccurrence of last week's mishap, but I have to wonder how she planned to read it while she was planning the piano.
At first I was afraid we'd seen the last of the personable Syesha Mercado from last week. For her first song, we had Syesha barefoot again (does she not like shoes?) singing yet another ballad. But in actuality I don't think she did a bad job with "Hello Again." While it was pleasant, it did nothing to stand out from the rest.
But Syesha rebounded the second time around with "I Thank the Lord for the Night Time." This type of song suited her much better than the ballad. It gave her a chance to showcase her personality, not just her voice. I like this upbeat Syesha better that the crooner.
Also splitting his song choices tonight was David Archuleta. I'm not surprised that Archuleta chose "Sweet Caroline." Not only did the song seem to fit his tastes, but he handled it very well. My only complaint is that the ending didn't seem natural (I understand that's an artificiality of the time restraint). All in all, I thought this was one of Archuleta's better performances.
As much as I liked his first performance, I disliked the second. I know I'm in the minority, but I didn't like his versions of "America" at all. I think it lacked the power that Diamond brought to the song. I'm not sure if it's because of Archuleta's voice or because he seemed to slow the song down. Either way, I didn't care for it.
And then there's Jason Castro, slacker extraordinaire. "Forever in Blue Jeans" was a nice safe choice for him - a song that didn't require him to put forth much effort (and obviously that's his mantra - anyone else would have been mortified to forget the lyrics in front of the song writer). The performance itself was forgettable.
But his first song was nothing compared to the train wreck that was to come. Jason's second song "September Morn'" did absolutely nothing for me. I can't even find a silver lining here. I was just left wondering - did he try at all?
My pick to go home is definitely Jason (let's see if I'm right this week). I would like to see Archuleta join him in the bottom two, but even if Archuleta wasn't a favorite, he'd earn points with his patriot song choice.
It'll be one of the girls joining Jason. My guess is Syesha, after all forgetting the words didn't earn Brooke a bottom slot last week and she performed better this week.
Who did you think performed the best? Who's your pick to go home?

You thought Brooke was good on her first song? I thought she was atrocious.
And Paula... what was wrong with her?
what was wrong with her?
Um... She's Paula ;-)
Ah, well last night was the first episode I saw this year.
Yeah, her second song kinda redeemed herself.
Has anyone else noticed that she just looks really... fake? That smile... something's wrong.
I was really looking forward to this week, perhaps more than I should, but I was pretty disappointed at the outcome. The show was way too rushed, and Ryan was just pissing me off with his whole rush rush attitude tonight.
David Cooks probably had the most well rounded performance of the night. I can't really complain about either of his, other than there is a reason those songs were lesser known. He put himself at a disadvantage by working with lesser material so his performances only topped out at good, because that's the ceiling of those two songs.
I don't know what it is about Syesha, but suddenly she's clicked. I can see he getting into the Top 3 now and earn it, but I can also agree with Simon that she could get sent home packing this week because she failed to develop a bigger fan base earlier in the competition. And I don't blame the fans for not voting for her then either, it's nice that she's really come on strong recently, but she did coast for far too many weeks earlier.
Now Brooke; I absolutely hated her first song. I'm a believer was completely the wrong choice for her and she fell flat on her face. However, her second song was right up her alley and she owned it. Probably one of my favorite performances from her in a few weeks.
Jason Castro, I didn't mind his first song. It was him. He did the things he did and it worked, but was still pretty boring. I don't remember his second song at all. That's not good.
"Sweet Caroline" is my favorite Neil Diamond song, and David Archuleta completely ruined it. It's like he's never heard the original song before. Hell, Michael Rappaport, Timothy Hutton and Matt Dillon sing the song better... And maybe that's the point, "Sweet Caroline" is a sing along and kinda doesn't work when you try to diva-fi it. But still, David A didn't have to go and try to funk it out like the amateur @!$%# he is. He could have just sung it normally bad. Even Red Sox fans sing the song better. And it's just completely wrong that he did not sing a single "ba da baa", perhaps the funnest part of the song. As for "America", that's completely the type of song he'd choose and I kinda hate him for that as well. It's not like it's hard to sing "America" or he really did anything with it. The song has the lyrical range of an Andrew WK song. Which by the way, when do we get Andrew WK theme week? So I think David A should go this week for providing us with the second worst performance of the entire competition in his "Sweet Caroline", better than only Kristy Lee Cook's "Eight Days a Week".
I did not like David A at all last night. I agree with your opinions on his performances. He completely butchered both songs. I just don't understand why Randy and Simon thought he was so great. Jason was just atrocious! He needs to go! NOW! I'm not too thrilled with Brooke either. Her first song sucked and although her second song was much better, it still wasn't that good to me. I like both Syesha's performances. If she winds up in the bottom 2 or goes home tonight after Brooke and Jason have had mediocre performances yet again, I'll be upset. David Cook is my favorite, so of course I loved both his songs. He deserves to win it all because he has it all.
The only songs I liked last night were David Cook's & Brooke White's second songs, the rest were downright boring. Jason Castro does deserve the boot, instead of improving he gets worse.
You know the saying – I think it was also an Elvis album - millions of fans can't be wrong? I've always thought that was a farce and Neil Diamond is a good example of that. Diamond is responsible for so much popular dreck. Yuck,
The song "America" is a prefect example of that – a song that says so little yet acts like it's saying so much. I was hoping one of the singers I like would grab that choice because whoever picked it is pretty much saved – it's like singing God Bless the USA, a way to get guaranteed continuation for a week. I suggested, in my satire piece over the weekend, that this kind of song should be banned because it's so manipulative.
I say get rid of Jason – he again acts like he's not taking this seriously. There's no way he measures up well against the other four.

I don't know. Maybe it'll tick off right wing anti-immigration voters.
Scott, I gotta say, I didn't really realize just how simple of a song "America" was until I heard David A sing it last night. It has what, like four lines that you just keep repeating? How can anyone complain that Jason Castro doesn't try, when David A performs such a simple song that in now way is vocally challenging???
I always pay more attention to lyrics than music so when artists have insipid lyrics it drives me crazy. And Diamond's lyrics are almost all really weak.
America may not have much substance as a song but Neil Diamond really tears it up. He puts a lot of passion into the singing of it. I love that song when he sings it.
I didn't see Idol last night so I can't comment on the cover of it.
Reading your column is much better than watching the show.
Funny you say that OK because one of the things I've been writing - which I just happened to ask Vacelts to edit this weekend - is advice on how we can write better recaps and reviews here. And one thing I mention is that we have, as recappers, to walk the fine line beween focusing too much on just recapping or focusing too much on just reviewing (because that might assume the reader watched the show.)
Put simply we never know how many people who read columns like this read the recaps but skip the show.
After the hosing Carly got last week, I did not watch. NCIS had a new episode (the writer's strike is finally over!)
I think your review's pretty much spot on. I also picked Syesha and Jason as bottom 2, with Jason going home. I guess we'll find out tonight!
I so agree with most of the comments here that it's pointless to go through them all, but I just have to say two things: (1) David Cook is a freakin' genius and should, if there is a God, be the next American Idol and, thus, will end up being the most successful Idol in Idol history; and (2) David Archufakinit is the evil son of Charles Manson. I am SERIOUS, people. Hop in your wayback machine to about the week the Top 10 were chosen ~ it was the first night he'd gotten any criticism from the judges, and while Simon's comment was spot-on, it was, well, Simon. The camera shot back to Archie's face and his eyes went black like he was Krychek on the oil again. He was puttin' a bad mo-fo evil eye on Simon. I want y'all to remember this when Archie loses and we find Simon dead in the alley behind the Kodak with only one clue to guide us ~ an old ticket to Sea World.
Bev
P.S. ~ Does anybody know if Archie and family really were just visiting Sea World and the AI auditions just happened to be in San Diego that very day so little Davy decided, "Gosh, I've only been training for, what, 13 of my 16 years, and I've only been an Idolator, like, all my life, so perhaps I shall meander towards that not-at-all immense or intimidating line of losers, pass right by them and into the loving arms of my inevitable God-like fate, to be administered by my personal Idol, Simon Cowell. Omigod, should I do it, Mama?" I don't buy it, not for one minute. (Then again, I still think John Wilkes Booth was a co-conspirator.)
