The Top 4 -- Archuleta, Syesha, Cook and Jason.
Tonight the Top 4 had the songs from the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame at their fingertips on American Idol. But could the contestants make the best of these great tunes?
Leading off the night and topping my list was David Cook. I was very interested to see what he could would do with "Hungry Like the Wolf." But I was a little let down. I was expecting more originality. While Cook's version was a bit edgier that Duran Duran's, it didn't stand out as being unique. With the catalogue of music available, I have to admit that Duran Duran wouldn't have been my first choice for Cook.
The Who's "Baba O'Riley," Cook's second song, was more like what I'd come to expect from him. What else can I say? When Cook is in his element he can rock any song.
And proving she's still in the contest is Syesha Mercado. She is at her best when she adds some personality to her performances. So I was really happy that she picked a song like "Proud Mary" where she could let loose. Even if Syesha's vocals aren't top notch, she compels you to enjoy her performance when she looks likes she's having a good time like she did with this song.
If she highlighted her performance skills with the first song, she showcased her voice with Sam Cooke's "A Change is Gonna Come" and reminded us of her flair for ballads. And when she doesn't sing them every week, I can enjoy a good one from her. But if I'm honest, I liked the first performance better.
David Archuleta was deemed the winner of the night by the judges, but I was not so impressed. I love the song "Stand by Me" by Ben E. King. But Archuleta took a simple song and ruined it with all of his typical Archuletaisms - the outreached hand, the unnecessary runs and the campy mic moves. Seriously, the vocals weren't that bad, but the performance was marred with his signature moves that are not only trite, but boring and a sign of his immaturity on stage.
That said, I have to admit that Archuleta's version of "Love Me Tender" wasn't that bad. Of course, he'll never compare to Elvis, but it was one of his better performances. My complaint is that every Archuleta performance looks and sounds alike - just insert different lyrics.
And finally, I have so lost patience with Jason Castro. Not only did he prove that he was absolutely no originality with a really poor imitation of Bob Marley's "I Shot the Sheriff." But he also performed rock and roll blasphemy during his interview. When he talked about choosing a song from the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame repertoire, he said "There's a few songs on the list that I knew." A few songs? Seriously? This guy has no business being in the Top 4.
And his second song was further proof. Oh. My. God! Did Jason really forget the lyrics to "Mr. Tambourine Man?" And it was one of the few songs he knew. What else can Jason do to get himself sent home?
Obviously my pick to go home is Jason. And apparently, it's Jason's wish too. I think Archuleta should join Jason in the bottom two. But given the unconditional praise rained on him by judges, I'm guessing that Syesha will keep Jason company.

Little David did the best by far (big surprise). In the next results show, dread man will be sent home. The show after that Syesha will be sent packing. The finale will be a showdown between the two Davids, with little David holding on for a narrow win in the end. While talented, David Cook is simply too smug and full of himself to win this competition against the very talented (and humble) Archuleta.
I dunno. I kind of get annoyed at the Archuleta "ah golly gee shucks" kind of talk. David A just kind of reminds me of Beaky Buzzard.
Simon: So David, what are your plans after Idol?
David A: My momma done told me, to go get some dinner!
Just in case I've produced a head-scratcher, this is Beaky Buzzard.
Same here. I think it may be genuine, but it just shows his immaturity. He needs to grow up fast if he's going to be in this business.
He's got a nice voice, but there's nothing about him that stands out, that would make me seek out more performances from him.
Isn't that the case of all the winners for the past few seasons? They're all forgettable, and none of them, sans-Carrie Underwood, have made any real impact in the market.
There's something ironic about messing up on a Marley song. I can't decide if it's because the bar is usually so low for reggae or that the pot use of many reggae fans would explain WHY words are forgotten.
At this point in the contest the only interesting person for me is David Cook and I'm not sure it's worth an hour of my week to watch hiim.
I think Television Without Pity nailed where things stand with their recap of last Thursday's show
I think next week it's Jason, for a David-Syesha-David showdown, and then the David/David finale. I'm sorry to see Brooke go from a selfish angle, because I enjoy her, but she could not get off the stage fast enough for my tastes, too. I think my friend Karen sums it up best: that the nature of being truly gifted is too be awkward, especially in an environment designed to smack your gifts right the @!$%# out of you. That Brooke was in there fighting for authenticity in the most inauthentic environment yet conceived. That this was the perfect sing out for her, "I Am, I Said," because it's all about ending up in a scary place that is too hard and dark when you should have stayed safe. And of course that Brooke can easily be imagined having "in-depth discussions of existentialist angst with a piece of furniture," such as David Archuleta. But I like the idea that this was a challenge for her, and that maybe she'll come away with a stronger sense of her own goodness, and how bad the place she invested it. You don't bring a bird to a dogfight and expect the bird to fight. Birds are best at singing.
Scott, just for clarification Jason forgot the words on the Bob Dylan song, not the Bob Marley one. He just did a poor job of imitating Marley.
That's even worse!
Incidentally I was just realizing this morning that if I'm going to Jamaica with a guy I work with it's time to introduce him to some Bob Marley - if he doesn't know what dreadlocks are (he's the one who asked me if Jason was a boy or girl) he probably has never heard reggae. I hope he likes it more than I or this could bode badly.
ha. I won't. Besides it's past his bedtime.
Decided to get some Marley material via Netflix

Did you rent Live at the Rainbow? That's the *definitive* Marley. Great live show.
We've been watching this over here in the UK - it's repeated at the weekends.
David Cook is the only one that has any interest to me, and he's hardly the pinnacle of musical talent. At least he tries to be a little different, unlike most of the rest. We just tend to watch it for the soap-opera aspect.
It's the same with the X-factor over here. Leona Lewis seems to have turned out OK (she's an exceptional singer) but even her stuff is a bit ordinary. Very few artists in these programs seem to have much original art or anything new to add
So here's my theory about David Cook after two weeks of two songs: his first song is basically a throw away song. He just does something that can best be described by Simon as "above average". Then he goes on and kills his second song. So, why throw away the first song? Because a week just isn't long enough for him to prepare two songs with his usual rigor. So his aim is to not embarrass himself with the first song, and then blow people away with his second song. It's not a bad strategy. That being said, I didn't really care for what he did with "Baba O'Riley", though I think if he had another minute, it would have been much better.
So since I'm giving out theories, here's another one for David Archuleta, I think he's a bit slow, which is why he comes off as a 12 year old in interviews (most people write this off because he's so young at 17, but seriously, talk to a normal 17 year old, they aren't that dumb.) He also has a problem with lyrics as we've seen, which is why he's chosen songs like "America" and "Stand by Me" recently where he's basically cut out most of the versus and just sung the one line chorus over and over and over again.
I think Jason should have gone out a good three or four weeks ago, his last good song was "Over the Rainbow" and how long ago was that? He's certainly ready to go this week, but considering how he's been safe the past few weeks, I wonder if he just has more fan support than Syesha...
As for Syesha, I felt she took a big step backwards this week. She went back to her trying to be a diva routine but falling flat on her face because she just doesn't have the vocals to compare to Tina, Whitney or Mariah, few do. But most people are smart enough to not even try.
I thought he could have done a much better job with O'Reilly but the time restriction was a problem. Which raises the question- would it be better for them to do one complete song instead of a portion of two songs?
Switching topics did you guys see that one of the members of Big and Rich is mad about Paula (and not in a good Mad About You-y) way

I wasn't sure what to think of David A when the season first started, because he has this sort of retarded sound when he talked .... just a little bit.
..probably. He's still a bit irritating, though.
Jason had better be the one to go home tonight. If Syesha gets sent home instead of him it will be a disgrace. He was so awful last night. Truly and utterly horrendous!
David A has a good voice, but he's lacking in the performance department. I don't think he'll go very far if he wins. I believe David Cook will be the bigger star even if David A wins.
Syesha was wondeful last night. She had so much fun with Proud Mary and I really enjoyed her performance.
I liked both David Cook's performances, but he could've done more with Hungry Like a Wolf. I just love his voice, so he could get up there and sing the Alphabet Song and I'd enjoy it.

Eh, while he's talented, if you take him out of the context of this overblown pop-star creation factory, he's really nothing special. I should know, he lives here in my city and played small coffee shops and gigs around here for a long time.... and if it weren't for the luck of the draw would still be doing the same thing. Plus his smug, overblown ego from his new found 'fame' is a definite turnoff.
A cool 'rock-ish' voice, sure....but nothing groundbreaking and certainly not unique.

I disagree. Cook has been the only one to consistently show that he has a knack for re-arranging songs and making them fresh. Last night wasn't his best effort, but looking back at all the best arrangements, the majority of them have been Cook's.

I agree completely. I think it is one thing to perform some of the greatest pop and rock songs ever well, and something entirely different to actually write your own songs and perform them well. He's great with great material, but can he create that great material for himself rather than just borrow from others?
If Jason doesn't get sent home it will prove my theory that a) the nation's potsmoking reggae-loving are uniting to help him and b) that group is larger than previously realized.l

You really believe that he himself is doing the intricate multi-part arrangements for the 30 piece backing band they're using each week? C'mon now.. they have some of the best studio musicians in the country up there, an army of producers, and a strong band leader to boot. He may have some input or ideas, but the actual arrangement and writing is all the show.
He's great with great material, but can he create that great material for himself rather than just borrow from others?
See my comment about him playing small dives and coffee shops around my hometown here. He wasn't too original/successful then. Unfortunately anyone that wins this show will be molded and produced by a cadre of producers and engineers into something "great", so who knows if he actually has writing ability at this point... he's already in the machine.

Each contestant can do whatever they want with a song...interpret it any way they see fit. They can do a straight-up cover, or change it up. Yes, they work with the band (and band leader) to make that happen, but it's up to the contestant to decide how to do a song. I guarantee you it's not the band leader re-writing the arrangements however he sees fit for each contestant.

Can you elaborate on this? I've only missed one episode of AI and I haven't yet seen any smuggness from him. Maybe you have which is why I ask.

Scoop any dope smoking, Marley listing people I know (admitedly not many) would string him up for that Marley rendition last night. It was seriously bad.

I totally agree. Jason needs to go. He just isn't trying.
And for the life of me I don't understand all the love for Archuleta. He has a nice voice, but he's a one trick pony. He has no talent for arrangement. He's just a "singer." He'll do fine on Broadway, where all he has to do is sing other people's arrangements in an overblown manner.
Randy was talking about David A like he's already decided - or the network or someone has decided - that he's the one to beat when I still think it's David Cook who is the one to beat.
I think it's going to be David vs David and while I know how I'd vote on that I'm not sure how fans, who tend to be young, will vote.
So here's my conspiracy theory. We already know that David A's dad is stage parent insane. He's been banned from the backstage of previous talent competition because he was harassing other contestants. Any chance this guy has built himself an automated phone bank to continuously vote for David A?
And another thing, Simon continuously complains that other contestants don't make their songs matter in the modern world, that they just sing it as it was in the 70s or whatnot. But when exactly has David A every made a song modern? He barely ever changes up a song to begin with and when he does it is a disaster like with "Sweet Caroline".
I so totally agree!
When I was writing my little review this morning, the only song I couldn't remember was David A's second song. Which bumped him into my bottom 2. I looked on dialidol, and it looks like Jason's definitely going home, and David C is number 1, but the other 2 are pretty close. I think David A really could be bottom 2 this week. He's really gotten stale for me.
Me too, Vacelts. The thought actually makes me feel giddy. I know, I need help.
BTW this is Jess-whatever numbers they were. I decided to change my name.
