The Sesame Workshop, the company behind PBS' "Sesame Street," is bringing back its 1970s staple "The Electric Company." The series, targeted for children ages 6-9, promotes literacy and aims to interest viewers in the joy of reading.
Production for the series is scheduled to begin Tuesday on location in New York and in a Newark, N.J., studio. Weekly episodes will start to air in January on PBS Kids.
I'm so excited. I loved this show as a kid. I was always a much bigger fan of the Electric Company than I was of Sesame Street.
I can't wait to watch this show with my kids!
I used to watch that show all the time.
I was always surprised that it didn't have the same shelf life as Sesame Street.
vacelts --my personal favorite was Zoom......come on and zoom zoom zoomba zoom!
Will Morgan Freeman be returning as Easy Reader?
He was so depressed about being an Electric Company cast member, he used to drink himself into oblivion.
lised, I don't remember Zoom. But maybe it will get a resurgence too if this one goes well.

Really? I had no idea. Could being a children's show really be that bad.
I read in this article, that he liked the character, but off course this is said years later.
Freeman says that the "Easy Reader" character "holds a special place in my heart not only because of the creative opportunity it offered, but because of the chance the role gave me to promote the joy of reading and the importance of literacy. I am happy to have that chance again with my role in NEA's Read Across America."
GR --- EAT GREAT!
Cajun, Totally my first thought, without Morgan Freeman, it will be pretty weak.

Can you not think of another actor that would do well in this show?

vacelts: Darn---maybe this will help jog your memory?
Ah. I remember it now.
I never watched it. Actually I had never even heard of it.
It featured Morgan Freeman, Rita Moreno, Bill Cosby, and others. Kids included a young Irene Cara and Denise Nickerson (who played Violet in the original Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory.)
Good times...
And don't forget Spider-Man!
I had no idea the show had all those famous people in it when I was a kid. I just remember that it was a fun show.
It lasted for six season (but each season was a 130 episodes) between 1971 and 1977
I watched it mainly for spider man.
I grew up on that show! Sweeeeet!
I know, great! I'd probably even watch a few episodes even if I didn't have kids. I loved this show as a kid.
For those of you wanting to stroll down memory lane, here's a few clips for you:
How could you forget "The Adventures of Letterman".
"Taking the 'M' from his varsity sweater..."
Sorry. :-( I overlooked it.
...stronger than a silent e,
able to leap a capital T in a single bound...
My favorite after school show for many years. First Mister Rodger's Neighborhood, then Sesame Street, next The Electric Company then Dad would take over and watch the news while we ate dinner.
Now Sherman let's set the Wayback Machine to return to 2008!
I learned to read by watching The Electric Company! I'm glad it's coming back.
I hope the new one will do the same for my kids.
