Something is wrong with American Idol, and here's the surprise: American Idol knows it. It's not the ratings; they're down, but after nearly six years, a plunge was inevitable. And it's not the contestants: Some past seasons may have showcased more talent, but this year's final sing-off on May 20 will almost surely be livelier than last year's Jordin-Sparks-vs.-beatbox-guy minor-league championship, or 2006's clash of the titans between Soul Patrol and McWhatshername.
Ok, I like the mentors. I just think that the theme for that night shouldn't be narrowed to that mentor's songs.
What is yourbiggest recommendation to fix Idol?
Ah! This is the one I was suggesting you seed. It has several good ideas, from getting rid of Randy and Paula to having mentors who are under 50 years age.
My biggest recommendation is 2 fold:
1) If this is suppossed to be a singing competition then either limit the number of times someone can vote or give the judges actual power of who should go home
and
2) (I'm taking this recommendation from the article), Let the singers sing for more than 90 seconds. Seeing Michael Johns trying to cram We Will Rock You/We Are The Champions or A Day In The Life into 90 seconds was painful. I would have liked to have heard him sing the whole song.
Great Article! I especially liked the one line fix of "The Delta Sigma Bimbo hand-waving mosh pit must go. Forever"
I too would like to hear them sing more of a song. These last few weeks, I'd rather have seen them do one song well then parts of two or three songs.
And I agree with your suggestion about the voting.
Well planned changes could help some but I think it will die in two ro three years.
I think we might be seeing the beginning of the end
