Heroes - Season 3 - "The Eclipse" Part 1 - Jimmy Jean-Louis as The Haitian and Milo Ventimiglia as Peter

In Heroes "The Eclipse Part 1," the eclipse has begun and it's having the reverse effect of the one we saw in Season 1. But we knew exactly what was going to happen this episode because we saw Arthur's sketches at the beginning.

It was pretty funny watching everyone try to use powers they no longer have, particularly the overconfident Sylar and Elle. The shocked look on Sylar's face when his power didn't work on HRG was priceless. It's amazing how reliant they've all become on their powers.

The best part was that Mohinder was finally back to normal. Not that I'm a huge Mohinder fan. It's just that he was reaching an all-time low in the gross out factor and I'm not sure if I could take much more.

But what does the newly healed scientist do? Sets out to stalk Maya. I'd be more concerned with whether or not this change was permanent. Will he go back to being creepy dude when the eclipse finishes?

Nathan and Peter spend their time squabbling, too much brother revelry pent up I guess. They find the Haitian who won't leave until he stops his brother, a Level 5 escapee.

While the boys are gone, Angela goes to Nathan's office where she finds Tracy, who happens to be on the phone with Arthur getting orders to go to Paris Island. I didn't understand this scene at all. Why did Angela go there? Does she know Tracy's working with Arthur and if so, why didn't she confront Tracy? What was the purpose of this scene?

Meanwhile, Matt finally learns Daphne's big secret when she goes home to Lawrence, Kansas and loses her powers. I can see why she liked her ability. I'm just curious why her dad didn't get out his shotgun and chased Matt and company out of his corn fields.

Hiro still thinks he's 10 so he and Ando head to the nearest comic book store to find the latest copy of 9th Wonder to tell them what to do and they find Seth Green. I really hope we get to see more of Seth in the next episode. But my big question is this: who is writing 9th Wonder now that Isaac is dead? Surely, he didn't have three to six months written ahead of schedule.

And the big cliff hanger is the precious catalyst - I mean Claire - is shot when she jumps in front of a bullet meant for HRG, a man she is obviously very angry at for leaving so often. So what does HRG do after patching up the now mortal Claire? Leave, of course, and return to take vengeance on Sylar and Elle who are still licking their wounds.

Guess we are back to "Save the Cheerleader."

I found it very hard to feel suspense in this episode when they showed us everything that was going to happen in the sketches in the very beginning.

The best part of the show was watching everyone’s reactions when they lost their powers.

What did you think of the episode?

I really liked the last ten minutes. Until then I was ready to quit this series but now I'm intrigued, mostly by Daphne.

Loved the cameo by Seth Green (oz) of Buffy

Vacelts, I mentioned a game I suggested. I'm still thinking it's needed. It goes like this - just as with American Idol each week viewers kick off one contestant.

I'm thinking Mohinder's first to go and Sylar and Hiro are not looking so good.

Yeah, the thing with Hiro and Green will be hilarious. :D

And from the looks of the end of last episode, things aren't going to go well for Sylar. "Says who?" Says the guy across the street with the sniper rifle.

Someone may want to swing over here where Chris seems to be getting semi-cold feet about this show (and he's watching a prior season so no spoilers, ok?)

Scott,

Robot Chicken is the brainchild of Seth Green and a couple of his friends. They animate action figures using stop motion animation. Hilarity ensues. They've had several full seasons now, including 2 separate Star Wars episodes. In fact, George Lucas enjoyed the first Star Wars episode so much, he asked them to do a second one, and even screened it with them at Skywalker Ranch.

Here's my favorite Star Wars clip from Robot Chicken.

This is a great Transformers clip.

Real World Metropolis - very funny

Here's a Pokemon clip.

You can get earlier seasons on DVD...

For internet access I'm going to need to pay for kinkos and that does add up. (I normally only use that option for printing and use a college computer lab during the day for free net access)

I’m not going to be online much this week – still no computer - so if someone else like, say, you, wants to review or recap House this week be my guest.

Just a guess - the eclipse ends just in time for everyone to get their powers back.  That means the cheerleader heals just in time, Sylar doesn't get killed, etc.  The big question - does Peter get his powers back after the eclipse?

"The big question - does Peter get his powers back after the eclipse?"

Considering that his was taken from Arthur, I kinda doubt it. Either that or it'll charge up into a different set of powers.

I think that would be an awesome way for Peter to get his powers back... probably better than the goofy cop out storyline that i'm sure they will probably come up with instead...

What if, when the eclipse ends, everyone who had powers when it started are powerless, but Peter ends up acquiring new powers?

Peter won't be getting his powers back anytime soon.  As for the others, I figure they'll get theirs back after the eclipse.  As for what that means for Mohinder, we'll have to see.  I seeded an article last week that answers a few questions.  One interesting point that was made was that if Arthur dies, the people whose powers he took do not get them back.  Does that mean that Arthur will die?  The Fugitives storyline will have our heroes on the run and some of them will be incarcerated in Club Gitmo style.  Who will they be on the run from, Pinehearst or some other entity we haven't heard of yet?  Whatever happened to Micah and Monica?  They seem to have been completely written out with no mention.  Will we see any more of them?

It sounds like the writers are exploring survival not just storyline in this episode, since Mohinder tells us tale after tale about evolution (which lizards and newts can regrow).  I think there is a credit here for Mohinder's character because he has been the survivalist, amongst these 'heroes'.  My impression when he gained powers, was that it weakened the strength of his character, because he had exchanged his own virtues, for the virtues of those he redeemed.

It is similar to the way superman is made wholesome because he rescues the innocent, Mohinder is a cross between that innocent, and the journalist who reassures our superhero with good press, the Jimmy Olsen of superhero morality.  Without Mohinder being sane, it turned into a slug fest, massive powers and cataclysm and only suspense, all character were lost to our moral perspective, because we lost Mohinder, our compass.

Speaking of deep thoughts and literary allegories, I had a similar thought with Tracy that clicked to me this episode. Tracy, from the looks of it, is the romantic interest of a man in a high seat of power who was previously told by higher powers that he is important and is manipulating the game to put him further up. Lady Macbeth, anyone?

Also, I had the thought since the episode with Hiro's spirit walk that the relationship between Noah and Sylar are similar to Victor and The Creature in Mary Shelly's Frankenstein, in that Noah, through his following The Company's orders, cemented, if not created, a serial killer who constantly attacks the people that Noah loves, namely Claire.

I am so over this series. I'm only watching at this point due to inertia/might as well finish the season and Seth Green.

Last nite I read Television Without Pity's recap of the prior week's episode and it helped crystalized some of my problems with this show, from the mistakes spotted to the predictable cliche plot points to god how crappy can this show:

like it's really common for bad guys to give their presence away by KNOCKING, and when Matt opens the door, there are Hiro and Ando. Hiro's literally doing a pee-pee dance as Ando shows him the comic book and says he has to fix Hiro. Matt asks what it says, because this page is in Japanese even though the one before was in English.

...

Mohinder's eyes suddenly snap open, and now that he has no special strength of course It makes sense that he could rip the webbing off like tissue paper, and seriously, how awful has this show gotten? He slides to the floor, naked and covered in goo like a baby, and looks in the mirror to see that the scales are gone from his body.

In Haiti (interesting eclipse that looks the same all over the U.S. and Haiti) Nathan and Peter recover from their fall, and Nathan tells Peter that his power is gone. Peter asks if there wasn't an eclipse the first day he flew, and Nathan says there was, and I think that was on a different show called "Ass," because it certainly didn't happen in Season One of Heroes. ["Especially since they JUST showed us again a mere two episodes ago that Nathan's powers appeared when he he escaped the car accident with Heidi, which was not the same day as the eclipse." -- Angel]

....

Oh, Lord, Bennet has his glasses off as he asks Claire, who's lying groggily in her bed, if she's feeling okay. Claire smiles: "Pretty good, all things considered." He assures her they'll figure out what's happening to her, but for now, she just needs to rest, and tells her he'll be right downstairs. However, after he kisses her forehead, he puts his glasses back on, and from the evil swish on the soundtrack, we're meant to know that he's NOT going to be downstairs, as he assured Claire, but he is LEAVING again on COMPANY BUSINESS. It seems like a minor thing, but there was no reason for him to have had the glasses off in the first place, and between that and the stupid audio cue, this scene has the subtlety of an elephant on PCP. Unless maybe it's actually the glasses that make him evil! Like if he gets laser surgery, he'll be happy to sell paper and go watch his daughter cheer on the weekends! Look into it, Bennet! It's super-affordable and can make you stop being evil!

In the hall, Sandra sees that his EVIL glasses are on, so she divines that he's leaving. He tells her, "There's something I need to finish." Something with eyebrows like the jungle, I have a feeling

.....

Anyway, the writing here is giving me the appropriate and very real sensation of being in a Tilt-a-Whirl, so rather than vomit on my computer I'll just tell you that the drawing of Sylar kissing Elle comes to pass. And that's not the only thing that's passing around here. Suddenly, the camera darts back, and we're watching them make out through the sights of the gun that Bennet has trained on them. And I love both those actors, as I've made clear, but if Bennet doesn't kill at least one of them it's going to be another in a long season of cop-outs. We'll find out next week.

Two things -

first, Entertainment Weekly has this piece, which I just seeded here, which has some great news for Heroes fans - the return of a writer to whip the series back into shape

second, I'm going to recap tonite's show but it would be great if we get a second person to write their own recap/review, one who is less down on the show than me.
