The first elimination of American Idol's Top 13 saw the birth of a new rule and sent two hopefuls home after nearly 33 million votes. Now the field has narrowed to the traditional 11 contenders and the judges still have a save card they can play.
The biggest news of the night was the new Judges Save rule. Up until the Top 5, the judges can save one person from elimination. They can use this save just once and the decision must be unanimous. That week no one will be eliminated, but the next week two will be eliminated (so in theory, the save could just be temporary).
The reasoning is that if the judges had this rule before they could have saved the likes of Michael Johns, Jennifer Hudson or Chris Daughtry from leaving the competition too early. But you have to wonder, if they'd stayed another week would any of these contenders gone on to win the contest or would they have just lived to be eliminated another day?
I wasn't watching back when Hudson or Daughtry were eliminated so I can't really comment on them, but I don't think a reprieve would have led to a Johns' victory in Season 7. But it would have been nice to look at him a little longer.
Personally, I think if they are going to change the rules, they should have let everyone know at the beginning of the season. However, it'll be interesting to see if this rule has any real impact.
It's no surprise that the judges didn't use their one save of the season tonight, so early in the game. And I think it's going to have to be a pretty strong contender for all four judges to agree.
While on whom and when the save will be used is still a mystery, the roster for the bottom four was no surprise to anyone watching Tuesday's show - Jasmine Murray, Megan Joy Corkrey, Anoop Desai and Jorge Nunez.
Three of these four were added during the Wild Card round which doesn't say much for the quality of contestants we got during that round. But in the end the Js were sent packing. However, I would be surprised if we didn't see Jasmine or Jorge again next season.
The evening led off with a medley of Jackson 5 hits performed by the Top 13. Let me just say that I have high praise for Scott MacIntyre for even attempting the group number choreography. We've see even those with all their senses intact struggle with the footwork before. Didn't someone even run into a camera last year?
But as much as I'm impressed with Scott for stepping up to the challenge, I am equally awed by the other contestants' willingness to help him find his spacing and direction during this numbers. I'm so glad that they can put their competitiveness aside; it makes for a better group number.
We were also treated to performances by Grammy winner Kayne West who say his hit single "Heartless" and by first season Idol winner Kelly Clarkson who sang her new single "My Life Would Suck Without You."
Kayne's performance didn't do anything for me, but it's just not my taste in music. On the other hand, I usually like Kelly's work, but this song just didn't strike a chord with me either. What did you think of her song
The rest of the night was filled with the standard filler, a review of the previous night performances, encore performances by those exiting and the first Ford Video of the season to Queen's "We will Rock You." Normally I like these videos (mostly just because it's less time we have to listen Ryan talk), but this was nothing special, just singing heads on buildings while a car drove by. Ford has definitely had better videos with Idol contestants.
We also got a peek into the finalists' new digs. And all I can say is wow!! What a mansion! When will they have time to rehearse with distractions like pool, steam room, Jacuzzi, basketball court, bowling alley, and home theater? After seeing this place, I'm thinking about auditioning just so I can stay there, but the fact that I can't sing a lick will probably axe any chance I have of taking up residence in this mansion.

I picked Jasmine and Jorge with Anoop a possible. Thanks for posting this. The program does not air for another hour and a half!!!
Yeah, you might want to leave spoilers out of the headlines, or post after everyone has a chance to see it (or alter your headline then....)
Well I had the right two to go home thanks to DialIdol.com.
Anyhoo, Idol couldn't have saved Daughtry with this new rule because judges can only veto the vote and save someone through the top 5 -- Daughtry to TKO'd in the top 4.
Same goes for Tamyra Gray.
I correctly picked Jasmine, but I thought the other person would have been Anoop. Jorge does have a better voice than Anoop, but his song choice was awful. I hated the song, but loved his voice. In any event, providing there is a big screw-up by the other singers, I pick Anoop to leave next week. My two favories, in order of preference, are Scott followed by Lil. I hope they go deep into the competition.
I don't recall when Hudson was eliminated (and am too lazy to look it up), but if she was eligible for "saving", then she very well could have lived to seem more than just another day. Her elimination was puzzling, considering she'd made it that far on far worse performances, and was eliminated after what was not only her strongest performance, but perhaps the strongest performance of the evening (top two at least, easily). If she turned in a second top-notch performance, perhaps people's perceptions of her would have saved her. As it was, I think it was those lingering perceptions that got her booted (perhaps also because she did so well, more people thought she was safe, and so cast their vote for some other favorite they thought was in jeopardy, who knows). So in theory it could work. I think it'll take a couple of seasons to see if it works. And if one who is "saved" ultimately wins the whole shebang, that'd be the biggest validation right there. I don't know if I see it happening, but then you never do, until it does....
Jennifer Hudson still blames Simon for her elimination. If she had been saved, who would she blame? (She conveniently forgets that Simon was one of those that put her in, thought that America "got it wrong" and had nothing to do with her having to leave.)
I think I have a minor crush on Scott, not for his looks really but because he is such a genuine good person. I give him a lot of credit for going out and doing the thing he loves best and not really being able to see everyone cheering him on and enjoying his singing. I did particularly love how both Jorge and Alexis helped him during the group number, that made me smile.
I see that they are pre-recording the group numbers this season? A few of them (Scott, Oil Rig Mike) were not lip-syching very well.
And I think this new "rule" by the Judges is just some stupid power play. They won't use it on anyone other than Danny, Adam or Lil if they were to be voted out before the top 5. I think it's stupid. Yes, I love Chris Daughtry and him being voted off Idol was a shocker, but he did just fine, in fact MUCH better than McPhee and Hicks combined! What's the point of the judges having at least one say on who stays and who goes when the whole point of this show is that AMERICA votes who stays and who goes. It's just a stupid ratings ploy. Plus the Judges Save would not have saved Daughtry anyways, he was voted off at 4. Ryan should do his homework before saying such things on-air.
I watched this quickly this morning. I will probably go back to watch Kelly.
I like the new rule... It is too bad it did not save Jasmine or Jorge. I think he could have done better. Both were stiff, but it was their first night. I don't think Anoop will do any better. I thought he should have gone... it was a complete impersonation of MJ and a bad one at that.
Although Alexis is my fave coming to the top 13, I thought her performance was way too fast. She could have slowed that down and made it really sexy. Danny tore it up!! Loved it. Lil Rounds was not too bad. I was not impressed by Adam.
I saw when Hudson left... It was a complete shock, but I knew even then she was not going anywhere but up. The same with Daughtry and Elliot Yamine. The two front runners from that year both lost their contracts already.
Exactly, Hicks and McPhee (was that her name?) are not signed to a label right now and Elliott is about to release his 3rd album, and he toured all over the world last year.
Elliot had a 2nd album???? I loved the 1st... or are you counting the single release as the 1st?
I thought McPhee was good when she auditioned, but she did NOT improve. When she sang that Christina Agrulerra song. I ran for the remote to turn it down. Her low notes were good; those high ones hurt the ears. Hicks was ok, but he got arrogant... and not for any good reason.
Vacets: I will let you know. I actually liked the December album, at least a few of the songs. (Sober & Never Again)
A number of people have done well after being eliminated from Idol. Enough to demonstrate that while the judges pick real talent to place into the competition, America cannot recognize it. More of the "losers" are doing well than the "winners".
Yes, unfortunately Elliott released a 'Holiday Album'. I will stop commenting on that, now....
We have his first CD at home, we got it at a concert he played here in Denver. And we got it signed by him after the show. Great concert, great CD and Elliott is about the nicest guy you could ever meet.
Megan HAS to go. Jasmine's singing was way better than hers, and so was Jorge.
And how ridiculous was Megan's little "caw caw" after her singing?
Me too.... She is sing about a robin and she caws like a crow.....
I said "What?????" The outfit was not good either, but Anoop was just plain awful. I could not undersand how he got to the top 13, there were others that were better.
I will say though, that with the whole "saving" thing, if it had been instituted with Chris Daughtry or Jennifer Hudson, believe me, they'd still be in a studio, trying to get an album together (and Jennifer would not have had the chance to act her way to an Oscar through "Dreamgirls."
Sometimes one's life works out like it should and the way it is meant to.
Precisely vacelts... :)
True... I think they get industry people jumping for them. This saving thing was probably Simon's idea, so that his company could make the money from the better person. American Idol is getting to be cliche.
The "save" is the least the judges could do. I do not see how it negates "America's vote." We do not vote for who should be sent home. It just gives one person (they only get to use it ONCE) a second chance IF all four judges think someone did not get the votes they should have.
I agree.
Michael Jackson songs? Can't bear to watch Dog.
Yeah ... it is not like wrote them all... I would have prefered more of them do as David did with Billy Jean and mix it up a little. I really wish Alexis had slowed down the song Dirty Diana... she could have turned that out as a woman singing it.
I am glad I am not the only one who wants to point out the whole 'Daughtry wouldn't have been saved thing.' Daughtry is ok, but I don't think he is as great as everyone else thinks he is. I have come across some of his performances from AI and he was exceedingly mediocre at best in retrospect. And his album was ok the first few times listening to it and now I can't stand to hear his voice.
I think the new rule is pointless and assinine. I don't think the producers understand the demographic which actually votes. It is mostly younger kids who just do the opposite of what adults tell them anyways. So if a judge saves a person one week, you can almost gaurantee they will be gone next week.
Not really suprised by the results, I picked the botton four yesterday. If Anoop doesn't take his game to the next level, his tenure on the show will end next week.
Just a word about Kanye's performance. If any of the contestants sang like him and "performed" like him, they would be immediately kicked off and RIPPED by the judges. Kanye should stick to recording and fixing his music, and stay off of the live stage. He was horrible.
Kanye's performance was 'OK' at best. I had never seen him perform live before and was underwhelmed. I was also distracted by the strange outfits his band members were wearing.
To me, Kelly was an absolute nervous wreck, she must have channeled all her anxiety from her time on the show last night. And her performance was also 'OK' at best too.
I had to change the channel while he was on. I could not stand it (or should I sit it?).
In defense of Kanye's performance...
1.) Small stage. His normal stage show is huge.
2.) No time to properly mic the koto drums and whatnot.
His Idol performance isn't indicative of what the "full on" concert experience is about.
As for the results...
Megan should have been the one to go instead of Jasmine.
And Anoop doubters, please hit youtube and search for the UNC Clef Notes. The kid most certainly can sing. I feel really bad for Jorge, because I think he's one of the better male singers on the show. His performance was better than Matt's IMO, plus I think Adam stinks to high heaven so he could have gotten the boot as well if it were up to me.
Megan and Alexis had the weakest performances. In relation to what they're capable of doing, Megan was the absolute worst. I liked her kinda jazzy style she displayed during her audition, but Rockin Robin was the PITS!!!! The worst. Horrific. I bet the judges would have even saved her had she been in the bottom.
I like KW's studio stuff.
Everyone sounds better in the studio. They redo a track at a time then blend them.
A large stage does not help anyone sing better. It does allow them to hide bad singing better.
does anyone else think the little red haired girl looks like Kelly Clarkson?
I thought there was a slight resemblance... Glad I wasn't the only one who noticed... :)
I like the way Rock Star did eliminations. The bottom 3 vote getters each week had to "sing for their supper." Then the judges/other band members decided who should go. I'm guessing most other people wouldn't like that route, but I get tired of seeing more talented people go home just because they are not as popular.
Good performance by Kelly but she should change the "Sucks" part to the title and lyric in the song. "Sucks"is just too cocky and vulgar. I know that it's a big buzz word in the last few years but one has to remember where the slang came and the original meaning of "Sucks" back in the 60's and people do think in pictures. Kelly it too classy for that.
I agree. I hate that word and cringe when I hear other people us it.
I did think Kelly's performance was good, but I've always liked her. I also like that Idol is bringing back past winners this year. I will surely hit the mute button when Fantasia comes out.
The slightly ironic thing about having the contestants sing Michael Jackson songs is that they all sound better than Michael. As an all-round performer, with the attitude, stage presence, dancing and general showmanship, Jackson excels. But if you just went on voice alone, I believe Michael would have been in the bottom four.
You can't be serious?
I do agree with Stuart. Michael's voice was never his strong suit (my opinion); it was his overall ability to entertain.
When Jennifer Hudson was on Idol, she was mesmerizing to me in the same way that Adam Lambert is now. There can be voices that one prefers - I like Danny's tone a lot - but there's no denying a dazzling stage presence and 'star power'. I thought David Cook had the whole 'package', as the judges like to say, but he doesn't seem to be blowing the top off the record world like I thought he would...
The problem with David Cook is...he's pretty much the same type of artist as Daughtry.
See: Nickel Back, Staind, 3 Doors Down etc etc etc.
Do we know that Megan and Anoop were in the bottom four? I didn't hear anyone say that - just that they weren't going home.
No we do not.
I think the producers like to give that impression to help shield their favorites.
IIRC, they used to announce who stayed in order of their vote totals?
Whether Anoop went last night or not - he'll be on his way out soon along with Megan - they're just not good enough. Frankly, neither is Scott. So over him. Kelly was amazing and i love the song, but like the song or not that girl can sing. Kayne's performance was terrible and I'm a fan. As to the rule change - it's our fault - we complained about some going home too soon. I just don't think it will make that much of a difference.
I still remember this blond singer from Utah (Rebecca something.... she is in country now) and this red head crooner (sorry forgot his name). They both stayed on quite a long time past their talent. Infact the red head crooner stayed when Jennifer Hudson was kicked off. He looked stricken by it. I think he got hate mail. It is no pleasure cruise being in that spotlight.
The rule seems stupid to me, They can only use it up to the 'top 5'...that wouldn't have saved any of those that were featured...Daughtry, Jennifer, Tamyra???? HOW STUPID TO USE THAT AS AN EXAMPLE, IN THE FIRST PLACE. I say, what is the point??
You mentioned Tamyra... Yeah I missed most of the 1st season. I had seen the show where she sang and then the next show she was voted off. I was in shock and addicted at the same time. LOL =}
I could not understand how they could keep the little red head from Texas and Guarini and get rid of Tamyra Gray. I got her album Dreamer... loved it. Did not understand why it did not do better.
meghan needs to be out the door next
There is one thing I don't understand about Idol judges and that is one of the singers sang a Michael Jackson song trying to get in the top Thirteen and the judges told him that it was a mistake to even select a song by the great Michael Jackson, and then they start of with a "Michael Jackson" week. How crazy is that? I guess Adam pleased them more than anyone did. They may as well have a Barbra Streisand week. See if the guys can pull that off.
I have been watching since the beginning and have picked all but three of the winners. The show is getting boring and there is not enough variety to keep me interested.
Something needs to be fixed, or maybe it is just me.
Kelly was so mediocre last night, unlike herself, and that Kanye West guy sucked, if that is who it was. Too much of the same run up and down the scale singers trying to sing like Mariah, or gospel singers.
I agree, it does make it worth it, but there should be some changes to refresh the show. I used to hate when it ended and looked so forward to the next season, now it has become so bubble gum.
It just needs a little facelift...just like me (smile).
