Computers in Preschool: Hurting or Helping?

advertisement

Because computer knowledge is vital in our society today, many parents believe that the earlier their children begin to use the computer, the better. By the preschool years, most children are spending time on computers at school and/or at home. But is it healthy for preschoolers to be interacting with computers? And if so, how do parents decide how much computer time is beneficial or when it's too much?

Who's leading the conversation?
This visualization below allows you to see the impact that each user has on the current conversation. The top row contains the group of users who have had the most impact, the 2nd row the group of users who have had the 2nd most impact (et cetera). Users with similar impact are grouped together, and the average score of the group is shown to the left of the group. The author of the article is also shown on the left, in their corresponding group. Each user's score is based on the number of comments the user has made plus the number of votes their comments have received. The scores are calculated relative one another, so while their absolute value is not particularly important, their relative difference does indicate a larger difference in impact on the conversation.

We use a computer with our preschoolers, but it is only one of the tools we use. I think it's great to get them exposed to computers early.

I've been in a school using the "headsprouts" program and it...is... phenomenal! The kids love it, it is very productive! To qualify, many of these kids are second language learners. It was the number two school last year in our city and in a very poor area. The number one had no second language learners and is in a fairly affluent area. I have very high hopes for some of these programs.
